I updated the widget a good bit since the last screenshot, adding new capabilities and removing a little of the ugly. Even added some help text. Check it out at http://code.google.com/p/pingboard.

Here's the short, pardon the pun, if you want to be mainstream, you have to offer this service.
Twitter has it, Facebook has it, MySpace has it, Ping updates them, why can't Ping update from SMS?

i have unlimited texting on my phone, and even though i have email and web access on my phone, it doesn't work in my area (parts of vermont), so txting ping updates from my phone is paramount for me, otherwise, it's useless as i use brightkite (which DOES do this from my phone).

There's a dashboard widget here: http://code.google.com/p/pingboard. Very early stage, but it does the essential stuff.

I got tired of recreating the webclipping.

I had the same problem, the scrambled posts made it to Twitter, Facebook, identi.ca, kwippy and my custom URL.

It's worth mentioning that I almost always update using the ping.fm site (either the main site or the iphone site) and don't use a BlackBerry.

Hey you guys. I just posted to ping.fm via txt using my email address that ping gave me. Listen, they say it costs too much, then send a txt with your e-mail address it freaking works and there is no charge for a garage based site as awesome as this one. Just sayin

A shortcode might complicate matters. It might not work internationally. A regular GSM no should work fine, although it's harder to remember. I believe you can get incoming SMS gateways fairly inexpensively, but it still might be beyond the budget. – Callum Macdonald, on July 24, 2008 23:59

Well guys heard of India? Ya we used to make flying carpets once upon a time anyways what I wanted to say was.. SMS rates are dirt cheap here.. It would be great if you guys could do something over ere and micro-blogging too is catching up fast

Same here, second time for me. First time took back to the store the gladly replaced it. Second time called Jawbone they sent out a replacement for free. Was told you need to "Break it like a Kit Kat bar"

Good point about Twitter's not-exactly-wonderful uptime. Still, I don't think it's a reason for not to implement the idea. You'd just have to add the caveat that Twitter isn't always that reliable. It hasn't stopped other services using Twitter. I am a massive fan of ping.fm and I use it a lot- but to be honest I would use it more (and recommend it to my non-techy friends) if we could have SMS- and using Twitter might be a start. – baritoneuk, on July 05, 2008 09:04
