I have this trouble too, just installed 0.6.1 fresh and m4a files still wont transfer. The ones I already have on my walkman seem to also show up as "other" and not "music" files. Curiously m4a is not included as the list of supported file formats when pressing the button above the device information on the sync settings screen.

I'm running vista, i'll try upgrading and seeing if it still does it.

What platform you're running on?
Can you upgrade Songbird to 0.6.1 version?
This should update your MTP Device Support add-on to the latest version as well.
After that try to add the files you having problems with.
See if it's fixed, if not, reply here.

I keep getting an incompatible file type error when trying to transfer songs to my sony walkman using songbird .5 that have been imported to my library using itunes (unprotected AAC files). These files are compatible with my device, and transfer without issue using other programs such as Winamp.
