DarkPassenger replied on August 21, 2008 17:30 to the question "Where is "rating" information stored?" in Songbird:
The developers are unsure they want ratings to be stored in the file itself. The reasons vary. "iTunes doesn't do it"... well screw iTunes. I know some people may not want their ratings stored in the file, but that's the point of the "songbird.metadata.ratings.enableWriting" OPTION in "about:config". All we need is for this to work if the option is set to TRUE. It's just a bug guys, don't give up please!!

Ditto. And same result on the newest nightly release. What exactly is it writing to in the file? – DarkPassenger, on July 25, 2008 23:32

DarkPassenger replied on July 23, 2008 00:53 to the question "Where is "rating" information stored?" in Songbird:
Well I think in most programs the ratings are stored, not in the files themselves, but in a saved library of sorts (maybe xml or some thing like that). In my past experience, I've never even seen an ID3 field for ratings. I don't know where the devs went wrong and this might be a dumb suggestion but couldn't we hijack another rarly used tag to get this up and running?
In hindsight, exporting/saving my library would have been smart. but I was misled (unintentionally I'm positive) and lost everything.
I just thought of something, would ratings in the ID3s be an obstacle to syncing that sort of info with devices?

I agree. This site smothers me in happy. Not in a smokescreen way... in a productive, friendly and supportive way. I feel indebted for the free product, the free support and the friendly devs. I'd like to point out that we users should not talk to the devs as though they are employees of ours, beta or not.
I, like everyone, am a webdev. The site is fine.

Yarrrr! It's back again. I thought the update fixed her, but only temporarily. I'm not sure if it was after upgrading the add-ons - that my ratings didn't show, or if it was just random. Anyway, I think I just can't SEE the stars because the ratings exist. (When I click the middle of the column the song gets a 3 star, for example. I just can't see the actual stars.) Any help would be swell.

I downloaded last week so probably 0.6 on my XP Pro. I have 15,000 - all MP3. I've not been able to figure it out. I suppose you can either rate them by clicking the mouse where the ratings column is, or editing the metadata. But neither works, and in the metadata the area to rate it doesn't even let a cursor blink when you try and click it. Is it possible that there is no ID3 section for "rating"? Just a thought. I use Picard for tagging if that matters and yes I can edit everything else.-
DarkPassenger started following the idea "Lyrics Tag support. (lyrics embedded in the files)" in Songbird.

Why am I unable to rate songs in my library?I am unable to write a rating to any of the songs in my library. In the metadata screen there is a section there but it doesn't allow input. What can I do?

That's perfect, though I lost the ones I had (probably because they were iTunes imports). I love it, Keep up the madskills. – DarkPassenger, on June 21, 2008 17:08
