This site is great.. it's got much of the information that I'm expecting to see when I click the "help" link from my wiki... Any thoughts on linking it directly from there?
I think that would help new users because it seems hard to ensure that people will run across this thread while searching getsatisfaction for answers to their particular topics..

Hi Dave! This is a confirmed problem, internal ticket #333, and we'll try to fix it as soon as possible. Thanks for the heads-up! – Vu Nguyen, on May 20, 2008 23:56

I just got off the phone with a coworker telling her I would set up the wiki with an invite key. Then I searched and found that option missing. It is easier for us to use the invite key than to invite by email address.
I hope that option will be returned. Is it still available on the non Web 2.0 wikis or the paid version?

I agree that there is a divide between teachers of elementary and older kids. Some of my middle school kids will absolutely cause problems if they are not required to log in w/and email address. It may be easiest to give the choice mentioned earlier...only need the invite key or must log in with email.

As a company that falls inbetween simple and protection I would like to point out what we want - as it may represent a point of view for educators as well.
We have content that we want to provide as education. We want to give a URL that takes you directly to the content in read only form, but it is still considered a private wiki. No log in, we handled that before we gave them the URL.
A second URL would be for those we trust to make comments (this is your student issue).
The key here is ease of use for both the wiki administrator and the user.

"How can I do this with 2.0"
You can't. They have "improved" security by removing this capability.
There have been numerous complaints, so they are considering options, but they have only asked for input from educators on this issue, so those options may be limited to "educational"-type wikis.
Only time will tell.

Unfortunately, we're unable to revert 2.0 wikis to 1.0 (because the two versions are *very* different). If you setup a new 1.0 wiki, just send an email to support [at] pbwiki.com and we'll do our best to transfer your subscription over to the new wiki.
Just a note though - we probably won't be releasing any new features on 1.0 and there may come a time when we stop addressing any bugs on 1.0 as well. Just want to make sure you're aware of that.
Finally, we're very aware that the feature you're looking for is important to a number of our users - we're still thinking about how best to implement that in 2.0. Once we have a solution, we'll let you know.

I agree with Dave. Not everyone wants a PBWiki Account. Some may be one-time users. Or perhaps, it's the wiki that has a limited, finite purpose. People may be accessing a wiki for a workshop, for instance.
Most education workshops are tightly timed. I think it's extremely important to have some method that allows access to a wiki without sending invites to someone's email account or forcing registration because THAT is a workshop-killer! You can't even begin to imagine what trouble it causes or how much time it wastes.
Many people never even get the invites because the PB wiki invite is seen as spam. And we are forced to spend a lot of time problem-solving. So this means you've lost valuable time -- and you're starting a workshop with a lot of angry, frustrated people. Not a good place to be!
I thought the "magic URL" idea was a great feature. Can we persuade you guys at PB Wiki to keep it?
Dave marked one of Tchalvak's replies in PBwiki as useful. Tchalvak replied to the problem "Is it possible to allow anonymous users to edit without logging in?".
Dave replied on March 31, 2008 03:42 to the idea "Cool trick for logging into a wiki without an account." in PBwiki:
We have used the "magic URL" to direct people who were "registered members" on our website to access the wiki. We only want to allow read (or comment) access, but no other ability to write. We do not want to have to manage accounts in any other way and do not want to force them to create a PBwiki account that we then have to manage.
How can I do this with 2.0 as there is no "sharing" link or magic URL While I could create a "generic account" and give people the ID / password I want to go directly to the wiki from my web page link - no additional login page.
