Finally figured this out. before reinstalling, make sure twhirl is uninstalled. You may have to do this manually. I removed the twhirl folder from the Program Files folder. Then, I ran a registry cleaner -- I'm using RegCure -- to remove references to the program. I think you can use RegCure free on a trial basis, but there are others as well. RegCure is a pretty good deal to buy, by the way.
Then BEFORE trying to reinstall twhirl, shut down and restart. This removes any registry info from memory. I think this is where the real problem was for me. Nothing wrong with AIR per se, but something in memory was preventing the twhirl package from running.

Damaged AIR file preventing reinstallationCan't re-install Twhirl on VISTA . "AIR file damaged" error keeps coming up. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling AIR etc. cleared browser cache as was suggested.
