Lina,
Thanks for the questions. This class has never had the download options enabled, as per the instructor. I have no explanation for how you may have gotten copies of the recordings before. Even if you were to subscribe, the most you should have gotten was an indication that new material was available, but download should not have been possible. The recordings are set so that you have to listen to them online, as streaming media.
David replied on November 24, 2009 14:42 to the question "How long do podcasts last?" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
Raveen,
Thank you for the question about the podcasts. The audio podcasts, screencasts and video recordings are removed from the classroom portal at the end of the quarter. They are moved to a storage server for one year, and then they are deleted.
There are two options that might work for you. Your instructor can request a copy of all the lecture recordings (either the audio recordings or the video) at the end of the quarter. There is a $25 media charge for each disk used. Audio recordings will all fit on one disk. The video recordings will probably fit on two disks. All requests for copies must be made by the instructor, and you may be able to work something out with them to get copies or help them recover the costs.
The other option, if the security setting allow it, would be to download the audio recordings. If you right-click on the links labeled "Audio recording for 2009-11-23," for example, and choose "save target as," you may be able to save a copy of each audio recording to your hard drive.

David replied on November 05, 2009 20:04 to the question "How can I save the BC405 audio files?" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
Lauren,
Thank you for asking this question. The settings chosen for your particular class do not support download of the recordings, unfortunately. The reason that the recordings are only available as an on-line streaming option is because the instructor indicated that they were using copyrighted materials when they signed up for the service, and they do not want the recordings to be downloaded. That means you have to listen to them online, only.
There are a few main reasons no-download options are chosen. The first is related to legal concerns that the university or the instructor may have: Patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and privacy . The second is because we are not using Digital Rights Management (DRM), which is a way of restricting the free use and transfer of digital content. That said, your instructor may have had completely different reasons for restricting downloads.

Megan,
I'm sorry that you are having trouble getting audio. I just watched the Thursday October 22, 2009 lecture and there is audio. I am not sure what operating system you are using, but in Windows there are several places where the sound can be controlled. You have indicated that your speakers are on, and that the program audio for the web page is on full, so I would look to be sure that the Windows sound settings are not muted, or turned down very low. There is typically a speaker icon in lower right corner of your desktop. Click on that icon and be sure the volume is up, and that there isn't an X through the speaker icon (which would indicate that it has been muted).

Thanks so much for reporting back what you learned, and for keeping at it.
I ran a bunch of tests too. I found that clicking on the ITunes | Podcast button worked fine when I was using FireFox. It did not seem to work using I.E. 8, however. I suspect that some security feature in I.E. 8 is causing the RSS feed problem.
The only way I was able to get iTunes to subscribe to the podcast, when using I.E. 8, was by clicking on the RSS | Podcast button, copying the shortcut from the Browsers title bar after the page changed, and then pasting it into the Advanced > “Subscribe to Podcast” window in iTunes. I was able to download two podcasts that way.
David replied on October 20, 2009 21:44 to the question "Listening to podcasts on your ipod" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
To subscribe to a podcast in ITunes:
1. In iTunes, choose Advanced > “Subscribe to Podcast.”
2. Enter the podcast's Internet address.
3. To download a single episode, click Get Episode.
Another way to subscribe in iTunes is to click on the orange and grey iTunes | Podcast button in the Classroom Portal location for your class
To subscribe to a podcast directly from the Classroom Portal location for your class:
1. Click on the orange and grey iTunes | Podcast button.
iTunes downloads the most recent episode. As new episodes become available, they're automatically downloaded to iTunes (when you're connected to the Internet).

Thanks for telling us about not being able to download the lecture recordings. Your instructor told us that they were using copyrighted materials when they signed up for the recording service, and they did not want the recordings to be downloaded. That is why iTunes can't download the lectures.

David replied on October 09, 2009 18:52 to the question "playback speed" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
K,
Thanks for the question. You can't adjust the speed at which the recording plays back. You can jump forward or backward, using the player controls or the chapter markers for screencasts, or just the player controls for podcasts. Sometimes buffering will cause the player to pause slightly before it begins to play again when you jump around in a recording, however.

Thank you for asking this question. We get this one a lot. If there is an audio player showing for each of the class recordings -- a long, thin rectangle with play and volume controls -- the recordings can't be downloaded.
The reason that the recording is available only as an on-line streaming option is because the instructor indicated that they were using copyrighted materials when they signed up for the service, and they do not want the recordings to be downloaded. That means you have to listen to them online, only.

David replied on October 07, 2009 14:50 to the question "Barriers to Using Podcasts" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
The on-line recordings are typically limited to students and instructors who are listed in MyUW Classlists. Our media servers use MyUW Classlists for authentication. These lists are maintained by the Registrars office, and they are updated nightly. If a student adds a class, it can take up to 24 hours for on-line recording access to be granted; there is some latency in the process.
Teaching Assistants who need access have to be listed in the MyUW Classlists as either an enrolled student, or an instructor.
In conclusion, if you are listed as an enrolled student or an instructor in the MyUW Classlist for a class using our digital recording services, and if you've installed the UW Services CA certificate in your browser, you should be able to logon for access to the recordings. If you've just added the class, it can take up to 24 hours before the access permissions update.
David replied on October 07, 2009 14:30 to the question "Barriers to Using Podcasts" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
Thank you for the questions, John. I will answer them in two replies for clarity. I will first address the security certifficate question.
Security Certificate Error
When accessing secure UW web pages, a message may be displayed indicating that there is a problem with this website's security certificate. The message says, "The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority; Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server."
Resolution
By installing the UW Services CA certificate in your browser, you will be able to use secure UW Web sites with certificates issued by the UW Services CA without warning messages. UW has its own Certificate Authority, known as the UW Services Certificate Authority ("UW Services CA" for short), which issues digital certificates for UW services. To install the UW Services CA Certificate, please visit https://www.washington.edu/computing/ca/ and click the "Install the UW Services CA Certificate Now Button."
Installing the UW Services CA on IE7 in Windows Vista
The Windows Vista® operating system requires manual installation of UW Services CA. Manual installation instructions are located at https://www.washington.edu/computing/...

David replied on October 05, 2009 14:08 to the problem "No Video for BIOCHEM 405?" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
Sergio,
Thanks for the question. I am a bit confused, however.
Susan Brockerhoff is teaching BIOC405A, and her lectures are posted to the Classroom Portal. If you are currently enrolled in the class, you should have access to these recordings. I've even verified that you are on the list of people that have access to the audio and video recordings. Are you saying that you can't find them, or are you having problems viewing them?

David replied on August 20, 2009 00:48 to the question "Bio 180 Videocasts" in UW: Classroom Support Services:
Thanks for reporting the problem to us. These systems pretty much run themselves, so we don't know if there is a problem until you tell us. You did, and hopefully that salvaged any remaining recordings for this quarter.
We checked out the servers and it appears that the screencast scheduling program stopped working. That means that the screencasts that you asked about were not recorded, unfortunately. Any remaining lectures have been manually scheduled, and will record. I apologize for these recording failures and we'll do everything we can to be sure things work correctly going forward.
