Thanks for your question--it's definitely an important one. During the private beta, some people are on the Pro plan and some are on the Basic. The Pro plan (which will eventually have a cost to its users) allows for a greater set of SMS providers. The reason for this is that those additional providers charge us fairly high fees per SMS message, whereas the providers in the Basic plan have zero or minimal costs.

We’ll be offering upgrade options to our private beta users in the near future, we’re just working out some kinks in the process.
