This allows you to store the configuration settings in a central place and have the client fetch them on startup.

The certificate problem turned out not to be the issue at all. The issue having secure authentication turned on in the server settings (which isn't that important when using STARTTLS, since the connection is already encrypted). The server advertises CRAM-MD5, but when we try it, the server fails and then drops the connection.

This is going to be fixed in RC2, but yes, you should be able to go into account settings and change the connection type to STARTTLS for the imap server.

yes, the fault is in the client; I have a patch that fixes the issue, but I want to extend it so that we set the sockettype to useTLS in the case where it was set to use tls if available, and the server said it supported STARTTLS

Yes, brand new 3.0 accounts won't have this issue, thankfully. Only profiles created prior to 3.0 with TLS if available selected will have this issue. If you set serverxx.socketType to 1 using the config editor, you should be able to see this issue.

I have a potential fix in the works.

I am able to reproduce the hang on shutdown fairly easily with the account, thx. The imap thread is spinning waiting for a url to run. It definitely seems like TLS if available is the key; straight TLS doesn't seem to hang on shutdown.

As I said, that icon means you're using a secure connection, ssl or tls, which, as I said, is required for gmail. I suspect you've always been using ssl; what may have changed is that now we're displaying the locked icon. What other icons are you interested in?

You mean it works downloading mail but it's slow? Is your connection slow? I believe gmail requires ssl connections so there's no choice there.

If you go look in the cert UI (Tools | options | advanced | certificates), what does it say about the self-signed cert? It sounds as if the core cert code isn't respecting the override; perhaps there's something really wrong with the cert, or there's a bug in the core cert code, and we're not propagating the error back to the user.

Would it be possible to set up a test account for us to try on that server? If so, you could send the info to bienvenu@mozillamessaging.com

That simply means Thunderbird is using a secure connection to access the gmail server (basically, SSL/TLS). That's not why access is blocked. Have you gone into your gmail settings on the gmail web site and enabled imap/pop3 access?

The issue turns out to be that an other process has locked the inbox on the imap server, such that it's only letting us open the inbox read-only.

Patrick, if you want to e-mail me the info I'd need to connect to that server and reproduce the problem, I could try it out - bienvenu@mozillamessaging.com - I've heard of the "tls if possible" issue, though it really doesn't make a lot of sense. I assume you get the same problem in 3.0 if you use "STARTTLS" with a new profile...

Since Outlook.pst is a closed format, Thunderbird requires Outlook to import from Outlook. There may be utilities available that will export from Outlook w/o Outlook being present, but Thunderbird can't do it.
