Hey Tyler,
Thanks for the suggestion. We'll work on that for our next release. It should be as simple as adding an anchor to the URL, like: http://yourcompany.shoptalkapp.com/#r...
Thanks for checking out ShopTalk,
David

David Shoemaker reported a problem in Feedmyapp on October 28, 2009 18:54:
App "David Shoemaker" should have its name changed to "ShopTalk"The site name for http://shoptalkapp.com is "ShopTalk", not "David Shoemaker". Please correct this. Thanks!
David Shoemaker replied on October 21, 2009 15:57 to the idea "Audio Notifications" in Boomplex:
We couldn't agree more! We are working on that right now, actually. For now, there is an audible alert for "direct messages". Direct messages are messages that contain your name. Tab-completion for chatters' names makes it easier to send direct messages. Try it out!
We experience the same problem you do, though, when the browser is in the background. If there are no direct messages to you, you never know when a conversation is taking place. Another user suggested here on Get Satisfaction that we put the number of missed messages in the window title, like gmail does. We've also had requests for light weight desktop applications that wrap ShopTalk and provide better notifications. We haven't decided exactly what we're going to pursue yet, but this one is high on our list. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey cleverdevil,
That is a great idea. One direction we were considering going would be to always list all users in the "Who's in the room" list, whether they're connected or not. The disconnected and idle people would show up at the bottom of the list with their names in italics.
Another thing we've considered is displaying status messages, like the ones you're talking about, right in that list, under each name.
Would something like that meet the needs of your team?
ShootQ looks really cool. It's good to see other startups out there building great products with Python. We'll definitely be at PyCon 2009, hopefully giving a talk or two about diesel.
David Shoemaker replied on September 24, 2009 22:54 to the idea "Display unread message count in window title" in Boomplex:
Yeah, that does seem to work well for gmail. We do flash the title if you receive a direct message (a message containing your name) while ShopTalk isn't in focus. The flashing is kind of annoying, though. I think your suggestion of a static count would be better.
Do you happen to know a reliable way to detect window/tab focus in javascript? All of my attempts have led to solutions that are right ~90% of the time.

Thanks for the suggestion, Peter. Notifications are something that we'd really like to solve. Unfortunately the browsers don't really give us many options. We're exploring other solutions, like small native notification apps.
Putting the unread message count in the title bar is a good idea, though. We'll try to work that into next release.
Thanks.

A comment on the question "Suggestion: invite feature" in Boomplex:
Hey Richard,
It certainly shouldn't be possible for a new user to belong to no groups. As you suggest, all new users are automatically added to the Everyone group (and by extension to the Lobby). If your new user was not added to the group, that's a bug! We'll look into it right away.
Our set of supported browsers is IE 7/8, FF 3.x, and Safari 3/4, and we test everything on those browsers. I'm not entirely shocked that some features don't work in Opera. Have you had the same problem in any of the supported browsers? – David Shoemaker, on September 05, 2009 19:54

David Shoemaker replied on September 04, 2009 00:17 to the question "Suggestion: invite feature" in Boomplex:
Hey Richard,
You're absolutely right and we agree 100%! We've actually developed that feature in the form of a little "send invitations" box that will sit down by the "User Guide" and "Give Feedback" links. We will be ready to release it early next week so you can try it out.
Until then, you can use the Administration tab to add people to your account, and they will receive invitation emails.
Thanks for the feedback.
ps - I apologize for the brief outage in ShopTalk a few minutes ago. We're back online now!
David Shoemaker replied on August 25, 2009 22:46 to the question "Search" in Boomplex:
Hey Johny,
Thanks for the feedback. The search function only searches for ShopTalkers in your account, not across all accounts. That's why Christian isn't coming up as a search result. You are absolutely right, though, that we should display a "no results" sign in the list. We'll get that done ASAP.
And thank you for coining the term "ShopTalkers". :)
