Dave Cross replied on November 28, 2009 11:39 to the question "Lack of demos / projector" in Magnum Solutions:
UKUUG usually have their own projector, but that wasn't available so we had to use to the one provided by the hotel - and that was rather old and had an embarrassingly small resolution.
So, yes, we should have had a better projector available. I've considered buying my own project for situations like this - one that I know works well with my laptop.
The other slight problem here was that I had just upgraded to the latest version of the Fedora on my laptop. I should know not to do that in the days before I'm running a training course.
Sorry about these problems. Hope it didn't effect your enjoyment of the course too much.

A comment on the problem "Pixelpipe is no longer free in the Android Market. Please fix this bug." in Pixelpipe:
Brett,
I did notice that it wasn't free. That's why I didn't upgrade and have now uninstalled the application. But I can completely understand why someone might not notice your sneaky switch. Particularly as we've never (as far as I know) seen an app go from free to paid before. People wouldn't be expecting it.
Companies have successfully introduced paid versions of free apps before. But they do it by introducing a new app, not by changing the status of an existing one.
I notice there hasn't even been a mention of this change on your blog. Surely if it's something that you're not ashamed of, you'd take the time to explain the decision to your users. From where I'm sitting it looks like you're trying to sweep it under the carpet and hope that no-one notices.
How many one-star reviews have you had on the Android marketplace since introducing this change? Doesn't that convince you that you made a bad move?
And just to reiterate, I don't object in the slightest to you charging for an app. It is the completely unannounced change from free to paid that I don't like. – Dave Cross, on July 17, 2009 15:26

I don't object to paying for software at all. I've bought a number of apps from the Android marketplace, but I really object to the way that this change was forced onto users.
The best way to handle this would have been to introduce a new "Pro" product which wasn't free and to add new features to that product, leaving the old product as free. Switching from free to paid and hoping that people wouldn't notice in the upgrade seems really underhand. And looking at the comments today it seems I'm not alone. Pixelpipe has gone from a 5-star product to a 3-star one.
I know you want to make money from the product, but treating your users like this is really low.-

A comment on the question "Best site for perl queries?" in O'Reilly Media:
I don't think these are very good suggestions. perl.org is a directory of links (not a place to get questions answered) and perl.com is now completely umaintained. Perlmonks (http://perlmonks.org/) is a much better place to go. – Dave Cross, on April 24, 2009 16:18
Dave Cross reported a problem in Technorati on April 24, 2009 16:16:
DNS Problems with Link Count WidgetI'm using the link count widget (http://technorati.com/tools/linkcount/) but today its performance is dreadful. Looks like a DNS redirection problem.
The widget is loaded from embed.technorati.com, but that is redirected to widgetd.technorati.com - which times out. Is that "widgetd" correct. I think it should probably be "widgets".
This means that my blog (http://blog.dave.org/) is taking ages to load - it waits for each access to timeout.

Perhaps a better place to discuss this would be this discussion on the Twitter Get Satisfaction forum.
