Dawn Frausto replied on November 25, 2009 17:15 to the question "Possible instructional error" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Watwoh.
Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I checked in with Lesa, the book's author, and here was her response:
------------------------
Since Photoshop won't allow you to add a layer mask to a Background layer, you have to double-click it to make it editable. Doing so will summon a "Do you want to name this layer?" dialog box, but you can simply click OK to dismiss it. Now when you look at your Layers panel, the Background layer will most likely be named "Layer 1" and it won't have the little padlock to its right. At that point, you're clear to add the layer mask.
--------------------------
I hope that clarifies things for you.
All the best,

Dawn Frausto replied on October 02, 2009 17:16 to the question "Confused about iphoto disk image files in Iphoto '09 Book" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi enidrk.
I checked with one of the authors about your question and got the following info:
----------------------
The authors were suggesting that folks could make a bunch of iPhoto backup DVDs and convert them to disc images to get some stuff *out of the iPhoto library database* so it wouldn't be as unwieldily and sluggish---not so much to clear off overall hard drive space on the computer. So, yes, making disc images does still take up 4+ gigs of room per shot, but it's not data that iPhoto itself has to deal with in its main photo library, which hopefully makes the program zippier and happier.
There's also the advantage, if you make disc images of all the DVDs, of only taking along disc images of the ones you *might* need when you travel and leaving the rest behind, which still saves you a bit of space. You can also copy disc images into USB drives, which are smaller to lug around than DVDs.
----------------------
Does that help?
Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Glenn.
Thanks for your feedback about the index.
We know indexes are an extremely important part of our books, and we strive to make them as useful as possible. I'm sorry that this index lacked the entry you were looking for. I'll make a note to add it to the next printing.

Dawn Frausto replied on September 01, 2009 04:27 to the question "Duplicate photos: how do I lose them?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Robert.
Thanks for getting in touch.
Page 146 of "iPhoto '09: The Missing Manual" recommends using a free program called iPhoto Diet to get rid of duplicates in your iPhoto library. But since the book was published, we've discovered that iPhoto Diet hasn't been updated in a while and doesn't work with iPhoto '09. (We'll correct this in the next printing.)
We haven't found a free replacement for iPhoto Diet, but check out Duplicate Annihilator, which costs $8: http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/ind...
I hope this helps.

Hi Howard.
I'm sorry our book doesn't include the information you're looking for. I'm not sure which edition of the book or software you have, but perhaps you can find the info you want on ElementsVillage: http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/
I hope this helps.

Hi David.
Thanks for getting in touch.
You're right, looks like iPhoto Diet is outdated. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, and sorry for the inconvenience.
While we haven't found another free program that does the same thing as iPhoto Diet, check out Duplicate Annihilator (http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/ind...) which is only $8.
I hope this helps.

Dawn Frausto replied on July 29, 2009 17:22 to the question "Vista address in Elements 7 for downloading shapes doesn't exist. Was there a misprint (pg 500)?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Carolee.
Thanks for getting in touch. Sorry you're having trouble.
I'm afraid I'm not running Vista so I can't check out your question firsthand. But the path should be C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Presets\Custom Shapes
I asked the author about your problem, and she said you might accidentally be starting from Program Data rather than Program Files.
I hope this helps.

Dawn Frausto replied on May 06, 2009 18:15 to the question "iCal syncing with google all events" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi David.
I edited the book "Google Apps: The Missing Manual" (http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596515...), which covers Google Calendar. As far as I know, you can't sync iCal with Google Calendar, though you can export individual calendars from iCal and then import them into Google Calendar. That was the case when we were working on the book, and I just checked Google's Calendar help pages and it still seems to be the case.
I'm afraid I don't know about the 24-week limit. Perhaps you could try posting your question in Google's Calendar help forum.
I hope this helps.

-Dawn
Dawn Frausto replied on February 20, 2009 16:36 to the question "can't import cosmofarmer.sql" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Bill.
I checked with the book's author about your problem. He says he'd need more information to know exactly what the problem is, but he suggested that maybe you haven't yet created the cosmofarmer databse, or perhaps you tried to import that database from the main SQL tab instead of first going to the cosmofarmer database in phpMyAdmin and then using the IMPORT tab to import that data.
I hope that helps.
Best,
-Dawn

Hi Ron.
Sorry you're frustrated with "FileMaker Pro 10: The Missing Manual". We always try to have the Missing CDs up by the time the book comes out, but we're running a little behind on this title. We hope to have the Missing CD page/files up in the next few days.
If you like, we can email you the sample files (for details, see Nan's response to someone who asked the same question: http://tinyurl.com/buqw5s).
Again, sorry for the delay.
