I replied to someone else with this problem. Apparently it's a fault with a lot of tom tom units. There is some kind of button or thingy inside that needs to be activated or twiddled with. I sent mine off to some guy in Sheffield who sorted it out for 55 pounds. works ok now. But seems it's another of those amusing things that was added by Tom tom think they hope we will just buy new ones lol
