Hello, David.
Sorry about the situation. That's a pretty alarming amount, and I'd be pretty upset if I were you. I can get the case forwarded to the right hands within Dell. You can contact me via Twitter if you like. http://twitter.com/BillatDell If not, you can post your email here and remove it once I have it, but mask it so it doesn't get scraped by spammers. Something like emailATserviceprovider.commm.

Ah. OK. Bad news then. The M1730 will support a max of 4 GB.

Hi.
Sorry, could you clarify the model number? Are you sure it has an "M" in it? I'm guessing it's a 730 desktop, and not one of the M laptops.
You should have 2 Memory Expansion Cards (MEC's). Each supports up to 8 DIMM's at up to 1GB each. So it should take 16GB without a BIOS flash.
I tried to find memory information in the online manuals, but could not.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs...
Here's a copy/paste from the internal docs about memory.
Memory Modes
The memory controller only supports PC100 registered SDRAM DIMMs. The memory sub-system can operate in two (2) different modes.
Interleaved Mode: Two (2) MECs installed. This configuration offers the highest performance by dividing the total system RAM across two (2) MECs. This reduces the probability of wait states, thus increasing speed on sequential accesses. To operate in interleaved mode, BOTH MECs MUST BE USED WITH AT LEAST THE TOP FOUR (4) DIMM SITES POPULATED ON EACH MEC.
Single-port Mode: One (1) MEC installed. The single MEC responds to all memory addresses.
DIMM Installation Sequence
The DIMMs must be installed within groups of four (4). Each board has eight (8) DIMM sites. The top four (4) DIMM sites on each board form the top, or right, stack while the bottom four (4) DIMM sites on each board form the bottom, or left stack. If a single memory board is used, a minimum of four (4) DIMMs must be populated in the top stack.
For optimum performance, both memory cards should be installed with the top four (4) DIMM slots populated with the same size, type, and brand of memory. This recommendation utilizes both memory ports and achieves maximum memory bandwidth.

Argh! I saw your system details, and note there is a special message attached to your service tag that says you are covered for the Nvidia GPU issue. Not sure why they are refusing service. Only problem is your case notes that are visible to me do not include your email address. I will need that to submit the case. Can you drop it into this thread in this format please: emailATsomethingDOTcom – Dell-Bill_B, on July 23, 2009 14:24

Donna,
Your warranty was enhanced for 12 months past the original expiration for issues specific to the Nvidia GPU. You need to contact tech support and have a service set up to replace the motherboard. – Dell-Bill_B, on July 23, 2009 14:20

The reason I suggest you register at the Dell forums is that there is no private message system here on gs.com, and I can't ask you to post private information publicly. – Dell-Bill_B, on July 22, 2009 15:32

Sorry to hear about your frustration, but I will be direct: You are covered for Nvidia GPU failure related hardware problems on this system until at least 2 years from the date of purchase. If you can get me your service tag, I will have this issue addressed by the appropriate group within Dell. Thanks for your patience.

Hi, david2008.
This is actually the Dell section of GS.com, but I will take a stab at it. On many hinge designs there is a spring that runs laterally and is coiled inside the hinge assembly. I can't tell from the angle of the picture, but is there a screw that runs laterally on the outside edge of the hinge assemblies?

Your larger point was not lost on me. I was only addressing the drivers issue, as that seemed to be the central point, and the one I am qualified to speak to. Even though we do not support XP on that particular box, we maintain the Dell Community Forums so that users can get help for unsupported issues from other users. Again, we never warranted or implied support for XP on the system before or after point of sale.
I also understand your restaurant analogy, and I acknowledge that even if I point out our competitors have similar policies, it will not matter, as you have already had the experience of trying to order sushi at my steakhouse. For this misunderstanding, I apologize, but can do nothing about. However, I will bring up the issue of alternative O/S support at every opportunity.
Dell-Bill_B replied on May 27, 2009 13:35 to the idea "Michael Dell can you hear me?" in Dell:
Blackie,
The Studio 1735 was not marketed with XP or developed with XP in mind as a supported O/S. Dell tests and develops drivers for supported O/S's that are offered with the system at point of sale or as an upgrade option. I apologize for any inconvenience, but your best avenue for a resolution to installing an unsupported O/S on the system is via resources outside of Dell- just as it would be if you wanted to install Linux, Windows 2000, or any other unsupported O/S.
