i've had a similar problem where my MacBook Pro 13" (10.5.8) keyboard stopped responding to key presses (whilst i was actually typing/working). Tab, Command and Return worked, It was a progressive failure over about 60-90 seconds, thus allowing me to save some work and switch applications and try and shutdown (without pulling out the power).. after numerous restarts, the same problem kept happening about 120 seconds after login.

racking my brain, i remember i had this problem when i first got the macbook. (only an external keyboard worked). i decided to visit the 'universal access' preference pane. in there, is a strange situation where the 'mouse keys' were activated (with the option to activate after 5 'option' key presses). hmm, not that i recall activating it or pressing the option key 5 times. i should know this as i was writing a paragraph of text in a layout program at the time.

So, Check for Mouse Keys, and disable Enable access for Assistive Devices too. I feel like i become disabled when this problem occurs.

Thanks to Conor, i got a reply and solution to my serial number dilemma within 30 mins of sending an email. awesome. i'm glad i didn't perceiver with the awful on-hold music for another 4 hours.
