The last post to this topic was two months ago. No updates and FriendBook is not on the App Store.

What was wrong with FriendBook in the first place? I never tried to use the handshake feature, but I've heard it didn't work very well. The app itself is ok for its other features, so why remove it altogether instead of just removing handshake and releasing it again with the feature disabled until the problems could be worked out?

Will FriendBook be updated, or should the existing users look to purchase another similar app (I think there are other free ones as well) instead? I like the app, but "dead" apps have to be removed and replaced with apps that are getting updated semi-regularly. Eventually, an update to the firmware down the road will break the dead apps anyway, so it's best not to get too attached to them or their features and to put support behind those apps that will be updated, so that their devs will continue development.

This post is no attack on Tapulous. If FriendBook is dead, that's ok. If you are focused on Twinkle and Tap Tap Revenge and don't have time or resources for FriendBook, that might actually be a good thing. I'd just like an update is all.

I tried again, and I got the confirmation that an email has been sent to me. I did this the other day. I clicked the link in the email sent to me (again today), and went back into Twinkle. Now it added the iPhone. I tried all this the other day and it didn't work. I figured I needed to give it a few minutes, and then never came back to it. I cannot seem to add the current iPhone to my Tapulous profile. I enter the username and email, select my picture, and tap the Done button. I then get the "Add Device" message. I tap the appropriate button, and nothing else happens. I tap Done again, and the same message appears. It's a loop.

Whenever I click a ping.fm image link, the page takes a long time to load, and sometimes returns an error and doesn't load at all. Is ping.fm currently over capacity? I ask, because it seems that the last few days have proven to be a lot to handle for the service, if the load times for pages are any indication. Is capacity being increased? Ping.fm is a great service, and I'm hoping it's just hurricane Gustav in the US or some other temporary spike that's causing this.

I know that you want to stay away from passwords, but I personally wouldn't mind if one were included. Sure, using the device ID is simple and it works, but using it, along with a password, would lay to rest the other users' fears, and I think it would also eliminate the issue of deactivating the iPhone if it is lost, etc (at least for me, since I lock my iPhone and whomever found it would need to reset it in order to use it). People are used to passwords, so no one would complain, and you could still use the device ID. Best of both worlds, I think, and everyone wins. – dmetzcher, on August 09, 2008 05:58

I agree. Using a password instead of the device ID makes more sense and removes the privacy concerns for me. I'd also like online Tapulous account management, which is something they've said they are working on in previous replies to me on this site. – dmetzcher, on August 04, 2008 13:36

I think I clearly agreed that this was a privacy issue in my comments to SV above. What I was offering him/her, in addition to agree with him/her, was the facts about unpairing the device ID if it ever became necessary, such as, as in his/her scenario of the iPhone being sold to another user. I agree that it is not necessary to grab the ID of the device. They seem to be doing this so that the Tapulous account will not require a password. I think the good old username and password setup is just fine, and device IDs should not be used instead of a password. – dmetzcher, on August 04, 2008 13:33

Not that I disagree with you regarding it being a privacy issue...but, if it makes you feel any better, you can "unpair" your iPhone with your Tapulous account if it gets stolen. That might help a little. But I hear you when it comes to privacy. – dmetzcher, on August 04, 2008 04:06

A comment on the idea "Please support the notification service of Apples iPhone (when its done)" in Tapulous:

Please make it an option we can toggle, in case we choose to not receive notifications. This could save a lot of people money, since, if they are like me, they have direct messages in Twitter coming in as SMS messages. The notification server would allow us to turn this off and receive the messages as data instead of SMS. – dmetzcher, on August 03, 2008 20:01
