As stated above, the Editor could pre-calc the waveform and store it as metadata in the mp3... ~200 bytes should be enough. Piece of cake!

Either it's not an infringement OR the license fee is cheap enough for everybody (except Tonium?) OR others simply dont give a damn and use the Sync button anyway and then wait for "angry letter" from whoever holds the patent before they remove it or pay the license.

don replied on June 04, 2009 09:52 to the idea "Peak meters" in Tonium :

    don
Well, the reason is simple: Because that's how real mixers do it and that's what I'm (and most DJ's are) used to. There's also a reason why real mixers do work like that, because it's clear and simple. The reason smooth shades are not used is because you really want to keep the tops within the zero range (usually yellow) with only occational red hits. When you got that you know your level is perfect.

But sure, throw in five or six green leds for more detail. I don't care much about the colors as long as this is fulfilled.

    * There have to be clear difference between "zero" and "above zero". Starting at perhaps +1.5 dB, there should be at least 2 or 3 red leds with headroom up to +6 dB or so.

But hey Tonium, why don't you just take a look at the current State Of The Art DJ mixer : Pioneer DJM 800. You might get inspired!

There's a lot of space above and under the Song / title to provide a peak-graph for the current channel. We still need the peak meters! Although they need to be improved see my other post on the Peak Meters!

    Peak meters
The peak meters are not really of much use since they are:

    - too small. Why are they mirrored? Use the full height for clarity!
    - colors are too dull, it's difficult to see the zero level since they fade to yellow, orange, then red.
    - too many colors, there should be only 3 colors: bright green, bright yellow (for zero) and bright red (overload)

We need the peak meters to keep the output level consistent thru out the mix. This is achived by adjusting the gain on each track until the peak centers around zero (normally on the bass drum or snare). The "close to zero" is normally indicated by bright yellow leds. If the level gets too high above zero, this is indicated by red leds. There should be plenty of headroom though. Below zero there are only green leds. This makes for easy adjusting of the gain:

Suggestion: 3 bright green leds, 1 bright yellow led (zero), 2 bright red leds. And no shades! and skip the mirroring. Make it clear and visible!

    Thanks,

    Don

    Thanks for your reply.

Regarding the pitch adjustment, despite the acceleration feature it's still way too sensitive in the low end. Also you should consider putting a low pass filter on the touch dial input routine (in the program code) since unintentional "micro movements" get registered. For instance: holding the finger fixed on one point can still make the value fluctuate.

About the FWD/BWD buttons, I was not aware about this feature. Although nice it exists, it still requires 2 fingers to operate. Its simply too difficult and "not standard". I think most of us want to see features that we recognize instinctively and are used to on industry standard equipment (i.e. Pioneer CDJ 1000).

Regarding Sync. Well, at least it should be possible to select multiple cases, right click on the selection and do a Sync (or call it what ever... transfer, exchange, update, refresh..)

I understand patents can be nasty but the fact is there are tons of software out there using the Sync concept.

    Suggestions
    PMD:
    * The new firmware seem to only display track TITLES when sorting on CASE in the tracklist. I think they used to show the Artist+Title before. The problem is that they are still sorted on the Artist, although the Artist is not displayed, so it's simply just a big mess. Fix it!

    * Pitch adjustment (P-up + touchpad) is too sensitive. Doing fine adjustment in the 0.1 % range is finically and tedious work and a mistake easily wipes out adjustment. A sensitivity setting with maybe 3 different levels would be neat. I guess something along 2% per 360 degrees (full turn on the touch dial) would be satisfactory for most DJ's (in contrast to the current 6-7% per turn).

    * When accessing effects together with P-up, after releasing the touchpad while still holding P-up the PMD imediately comes back to Pitch mode. I doubt this is what most people want and allows for dramatically altering the pitch instead of tweaking the effect if not careful "while in the heat" since releasing the touchpad even for a split second puts you in Pitch mode. Oops! The PMD should stay in effect mode until the P-up is released, for stability.

    * Fast forward and reverse should emulate the Pioneer CDJ 800/1000. Now it's pretty much useless, being all too slow.

    * Track preview 'a la CDJ 1000 please!

    * Option to chose Default file list filter in PMD.

    * Option to automatically remove tracks from PMD when deleting a case

    PME:

    * Files dropped to a Case from Explorer are not checked for duplicates - duplicates are added silently

    * Files dropped to a Case from Explorer (may) end up unsorted and this will be reflected to the PMD. Re-Sorting in PME & Syncing does not translate to the track list in PMD, they will still be unsorted.

    * Ability to drop (multiple) SUBDIRECTORIES from Explorer to Case/lib

    * See what Case(s) a track belongs to in the PME

    * Option to Right-click on a Case in the Device/Cases list to Remove

    * Option to Right-click on a Case in the Device/Cases list to Sync that Case only

    * Option to automatically remove tracks from library when deleting a case

    * SYNC ALL BUTTON! WTF! You removed the only thing that was right with the Editor.

    * Make the UI consistant, as it's not. One-click aproach mixed with right-click menus and so on.

    PME unstable
PME is generally unstable. For instance, If I try to use the Mix function in PME by dropping a track into the Mix window I just get an empty box and if I try to do something with it the PME crashes "bla bla bla...has generated an error". I'm running Vista Ultimate 64.

I had this problem too when my device was new. After firmware upgrade it disappeared, but my PM's playback is now skipping frequently so I will return it to my dealer as I can't work with it.

WHy not just emulate the Pioneer CDJ 1000 FW/RW, like that I guess we would all feel comfortable. Can't be more simple!
