Yes, addon's are definitely the best solution for even reasons beyond that, i.e. bloat. It's better to provide a core with the ability easy plug modules, which is being done!
The only real concern I have with the whole tagging issue is standardization/integration. I haven't looked through the dev resources yet with regards to this, but if it doesn't already exist, I think some suggested guidelines on database management for resource heavy features (i.e. tag lists) and their integration with the library/playlist.
I haven't looked into the existing tag addons that are out there simply because they don't offer feature sets that a simple search doesn't accomplish for me. I guess I should look into what the devs aims are of those addons in the long run.
The thing to avoid here, is something becoming too popular while heavily lacking, while being adopted as the de facto standard. This leads to slow development/adoption of features and wards off other devs attempting to create a better solution without support. Reference old ID3 tag specs vs new ID3 tag specs, i.e. multiple-genre entries, lyrics, standardized comments, etc. This took ages to come to mainstream, since public adoption dwarfs change acceptance.
Anyways, the point is, more than just a short list on the roadmap, it would be nice to formulate a suggested guideline through an open forum to layout the death-to-monolithic-micromanagement tagging future. Maybe a wiki project? Any suggestions?
Anyways, thanks for the replies, here and elsewhere.

Can I import extensions from another profile?Without downloading the extensions again, is there a way to import them if they're already installed in a different profile? Every time a new profile is created and it asks about dev tools and nightly tester tools extensions, is it d/l'ing a fresh copy even if it's the most up to date one?
Can anyone shed some light on this process?

It seems someone has created an extension to do that for Firefox and Thunderbird already: https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/...
Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey already do this by default.
Still, Anthony, I think Arnaud makes a good point supporting the need for multiple libraries rather than simply profiles. A good example may also be a media center computer in a living room which multiple people in the house would be able to access their different libraries (think home file server) without having to setup and change profiles.
Arnaud's example of full albums vs. unclassified singles could also be handled with a tagging system for songbird. This has been brought up by several people including myself.
Plenty of people with large collections are also obsessive-compulsive like myself and enjoy complex categorization and a tagging system allows that. And multiple libraries add an easier layer for multiple users to go back and forth with their music, especially when sharing new finds around the coffee table ;x
Plus, I think stepping into a mindset of say a company offering a media center solution or a software for their music download service that, i know stretching it, looks at it from an end-user perspective, would like a product that their customer doesn't have to ask to support multiple people from one device. (This can be seen as plugging multiple profile availability with little user knowledge and/or multiple libraries.)
Just some banter on the, imho, validity of both approaches.
Doom0r replied on August 07, 2008 03:03 to the idea "Last.fm-like multiple tag system" in Songbird:
Two thoughts on that. First, what about video?
Second, does "Songbird exclusive" metadata really benefit anyone by not simply being stored elsewhere? Pros/Cons storing in metadata vs an external db?
Only thing I can see is extra overhead on the actual files. If you have a license that allows you to send that file to someone else, is the extra info you added able to be extracted by the receiver, let alone useful to them?
Thoughts?

I have this problem also. In at least my scenario, it's specific to FLAC filenames and GStreamer core, perhaps Windows only, haven't tested other OSes yet. Bug just filed at http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...-

Keep in mind that this is a "media" player, not an "mp3" player. Many file formats are not ID3 capable, let alone video. A tagging system would need to be handled by Songbird explicitly unless a container was used for all files which would break the ability to use them on other devices without support.
Hmm, just made me think of another reason to have multiple libraries again..... separate video and music.

I've brought this up once before also and one key thing to add is the ability to use something like a checkbox table to filter playing from library. i.e. being able to uncheck "explicit" or "holiday" if you had files you tagged with those
Hopefully, someone can see the implied use in that availability.

Personally, I use EasyTag (http://easytag.sourceforge.net/) to do this. Works for multiple formats, not just ID3. You can fill tags from filenames and vice versa with A LOT of flexibility. You are not restricted to a couple naming schemes to work from, you can manipulate any. i.e. if you have an album named ## - Artist name Song name Album name you can set it to handle batch functions from these names with little effort.
Also has preview and revert options so you can switch back easily if you mess up or don't like it. All that ability would seem like a bit of bloat in Songbird and not fit in well with the interface.
BTW it's cross-platform ;x

Multiple libraries and tagging - Or how we'll learn to manage too much infoI have around 11k+ audio files and it so happens that a few of them are Christmas/Holiday related (even people who hate Christmas like A Charlie Brown's Christmas). Now, these are a part of my total "Library" and I really don't use playlists but prefer to jump around my library manually or use shuffle.
However, it's July, and I'm not into the whole Christmas in July thing, so I would like to not hear these songs periodically from a complete shuffle, but why should I remove these tracks to avoid that or use playslists when it's practically replicating my complete "Library".
There should be some sort of option to ignore groups from automatic play in the Library or filter out music by category.
Going the genre route rather than ignore has some unwanted side effects, so before making a formal suggestion, I'd like to see some input for a feature (presuming I haven't missed an apparently undocumented one). I would like to show the issues that arise with genre sorting which leads me towards a ignore function via tagging:
1. I use FLAC files for anything I can get from a hard source(i.e. orig cd). They use OGG Vorbis comments by default instead of the ID3 tagging system. There's no clean way for multiple genre at least as of yet. This leads to #2.
2. Multiple genre would be necessary for several scenarios. Enter "Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas". We have a Soundtrack, with Jazz songs, and Christmas/Holiday songs.
3. I'm having some people over and want to play random music but no Christmas music or explicit music either. Now we have a scenario that simple genre sorting wouldn't accomplish in the first place. If I tagged my music already, this could be a simple process.
Maybe a new tagging system that wholly covers the issues that have come up over the years of digital music that has yet to exist mainstream is the issue. Current implementations vary and vary in quality. Supporting multiple media formats thwarts any attempt at a universal option to solve this, so it seem to be that a tagging system explicit to Songbird is the best conceivable option.
There's even an option to tag this post as tagging seems to be everywhere in this Web 2.0 world we're aiming for, so it seems a worthy thing to work towards. It's a decent solution to sorting info that we've been lacking for a long time.
The community and devs thoughts?

Changelog/diffs info for nightly builds? Is there an auto-generated changelog or some sort of a diffs file or overview for nightly builds? It would be awesome to have an idea what has changed so I can look for issues related.
