It should be back soon. If it's going to be longer, I will post an update in this thread as well as on Twitter. You can follow us there to see all of our updates (@brightkite). – Lesley, on July 09, 2008 23:58

Thanks for the response. I understand that brightkite needs to use the "raw" password to talk to Twitter, but I would recommend storing the password in your database in encrypted fashion. That way a simple SQL query or dump would not expose them to malicious use. Only a programmer with knowledge of the encryption mechanism and keys would be able to gain access. – peccatorimpius, on July 01, 2008 22:40

We take all the necessary precautions to protect your account information and the BK employees do not have access to your password unless we absolutely need it. Ideally, we would prefer to not have to take your Twitter password, but Twitter does not give us any other way to integrate with them (e.g. using OAuth, or some other token-based authentication). – Lesley, on June 27, 2008 22:03-

Thanks, Lesley. That's the only thing keeping me from moving completely from Twitter to BrightKite. Much appreciated! – justinbaeder, on June 26, 2008 22:16

Justin, we are working on something that should help with the high number of users who are private on Twitter. I don't have an ETA right now, but we are working on it. – Lesley, on June 26, 2008 18:17

Lesley - I'm not sure that's true. Maybe the people who get the most attention on Twitter have their accounts set to Public, but there are tons of people in small, closed networks of friends (such as myself) who use Twitter heavily. I'm concerned that this population is invisible as a constituency, and that this will keep people from using BrightKite. – justinbaeder, on June 26, 2008 02:23

Lesley, is there anything in the works that will allow cross-posting to twitter while in Private Hidden mode? It would be a great thing to be able to keep my status on both brightkite and twitter viewable by friends only. – sunnyacre, on June 25, 2008 06:15
A comment on the idea "Post to Twitter" in Brightkite:
Justin, we treat Twitter as everyone else for a couple of reasons. Twitter does not have fine-grained privacy controls and the majority of users have their Twitter account set to Public. – Lesley, on June 23, 2008 14:47
