It isn't a firefox plugin. – Duriel, on October 14, 2009 18:58

Yep...use the tool I mentioned previously to get rid of the duplicate bookmarks, but the duplicate folders are very annoying...yet the foxmarks/xmarks people don't believe they exist! Very aggrevating and it would seem that it would be a very simple fix: Merge bookmarks from the same named folders. Simple.
I get RootFolder\FolderA\FolderB\FolderC and RootFolder\FolderA\FolderB\FolderC...two identically named folders in the same path structure, yet the vendor doesn't believe these exist. – Duriel, on October 14, 2009 17:04

I found a free app that solves your problem.
It's called AM-Deadlink and it's free. http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm
It gets rid of *ALL* duplicates, leaving just unique URL. Outstanding...finally, I got rid of the hundreds of duplicates I had, just like you.
Sadly, it doesn't get rid of the duplicate folders Foxmarks creates.
I wish Foxmarks would recognize that they have a *real* problem, that *real* people are experiencing this bug and that they would simply provide the option (should be default) to reject the creation of duplicate folders at the same level and duplicate bookmarks within the same folder, but apparently they would prefer to blame other add-ins. – Duriel, on January 30, 2009 15:07

You're very welcome. It certainly helped me solve a major complaint with Foxmarks...though how we can complain about free software is another matter entirely. :)
Really, though, I just don't see why duplicates aren't very easily detected and rejected. Same path, same URL: Reject. Problem solved. Yet the Foxmark people seem to think this is either rocket science or delusional users.

I had the same problem and Foxmarks' people just made fun of me and did nothing to address the problem. Maybe if a few more people report the same problem, they'll finally realize there is a bug in their software and stop blaming the victims.
Fortunately, on my own, I found a solution: It's called AM-Deadlink and it's free. http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm

Well, I never said that I was adding folders with duplicate names, so I'll thank you NOT to make up statements, attribute them to me falsely and then belittle them.
I did NOT add the same folder name twice.
Clearly you people either don't see folder duplication as a problem or want to resort to Strawman tactics, so I'll exit now and try some other product or solution.

I'm not assuming *anything*.
Even if I was doing uploads and merges, which I'm not, why would Foxmarks handle the same named folders as anything other than two folders that should be merged together?
Again, what is the logic of ignoring the existence of the same named folder, creating a duplicate instead of merging?
Regardless of the cause, what is the solution, other than another round of tedious manual 'un-duping' which will then get undone at some future date for some unknown or mysterious reason?
In SQL terms, how do I do a SELECT DISTINCT on the bookmarks to get rid of the growing redundancy in my bookmark folders?

No, Adagio is not right. No one is suggesting that /FolderA/FolderB and /FolderB are the same folder and should be merged. They are two very different folders due to hierarchy.
I'm not performing an upload. And this has happened again and again, which is why I'm finally contacting you after many months of frustrating, manual duplicate removal and merging.
I'd really just had enough. One time, okay, maybe it's my mistake or just a system fart. But time after time after time after time...no.
If I could delete bookmarks on the my.foxmark page in grid view, that would make handling these damned duplicates a bit easier, albeit manual.
I just don't see why foxmarks doesn't see that /FolderA/FolderB and /FolderA/FolderB should be considered the same. At least provide an option for it, for pete's sake.
A comment on the question "Duplicated, not merged!" in Xmarks:
Easy yourself, Adagio. If the same named folder is at the same level as another folder with the same name, they should be considered the same folder. Your example doesn't apply and is obviously completely different. 'Easy there', indeed. – Duriel, on September 10, 2008 17:25
Duriel replied on September 05, 2008 14:37 to the question "Duplicated, not merged!" in Xmarks:
Well, *of course* the second 'cars' folder is a different folder. But foxmarks should recognize two folders with the same name as the same folder. That seems pretty straightforward enough. Why would anyone want two folders with the same exact name?!?
I don't know what is 'normal' synchronization and what isn't. I just know that I have multiple duplicate folders (and sub-folders) with the same name and that contain the same bookmarks.
Something is wrong with your
merge algorithm. How can that not be clear?
Duriel asked a question in Xmarks on September 03, 2008 21:12:
Duplicated, not merged! How do I get foxmarks to recognize that folders with the same name should be merged and not duplicated?
I often get bookmark folders duplicated instead of simply merging them together. Why does foxmarks do that and how do I turn that off?
Seems straightforward enough: Folder named 'cars' and folder named 'cars' are one in the same, not two different folders!
A comment on the idea "Duplicates from Various OS, Browsers, and Computer Platforms!" in Xmarks:
Why don't you allow multiple selections and deletion in grid view? That would be simpler. Having to select, switch views and then delete is slooooow and tedious. – Duriel, on September 03, 2008 21:08
