A comment on the question "What do you have to report back from Mission #2?" in AdHack:
David, thanks for the feedback. Excellent questions and thoughts.
We're going to be cleaning up the UI and interactions with time to make it easier for ad creators. But I don't, at this point, see us changing some of the requirements.
Here's a little more on that thinking.
We tried to make all the info we considered extra to be optional. So the Ad Brief is almost all optional.
The info we considered key to how AdHack works as a marketplace, we wanted to make mandatory. Whether an ad was for sale, not for sale or sold was one of those piece of info. And if it was for sale, at what price?
I understand that such a restriction makes it tougher to test things out but I feel like it makes for a more focused site that serves its users -- both creators and buyers -- better.
And because we're migrating historic ads that were not marked as for sale, not for sale or sold, we need to get the information to create a new saved ad. To select not for sale on behalf of ad creators didn't seem like a fair selection to us. – James Sherrett, on June 30, 2009 21:23

Hi Craig, thanks for trying to break the process and reporting your findings. Couple of notes to add:
We're not restricting the amount an ad buyer can offer in a Purchase Offer. Who knows? Someone may want to offer more than the listed price!
Regarding the 404 error after the spam capcha check:
We're doing some data migration so the page that follows the creation of the Purchase Offer was missing.
Flippant remarks don't, today, break anything except ad creator hearts.
Thanks for the suggestions on terminology for 'submit order'. We'll get that edited!

Thanks, Craig. Selecting multiple industry categories is a new wrinkle. We can accommodate it with a quick UI update, so we'll see when we can do it.
As for more nuance around sales / rights terms, we wanted to start dead simple and let the nuances emerge through requests and actions. We're watching it closely to see what we need to add to make the sales happen. – James Sherrett, on June 26, 2009 17:37

The badges are designed to be like a trophy case for specific accomplishments. We have other ideas about what to do with them. What would you like to see them do? – James Sherrett, on June 25, 2009 05:42

The badges are currently not clickable. Where would you expect them to take you if they were clickable? – James Sherrett, on June 25, 2009 05:41

So cancel out the credit / uncredit corrections? We're on it!
We're also considering doing a rolled-up daily activity summary. Would you prefer that or do you want to see each action as a separate line item? – James Sherrett, on June 25, 2009 05:21

How did you like the new AdHack sneak peek?Did you browse around the website to your heart's content, willy nilly.

Hi Eric and Thor,
Good reply, all round.
You're right: 'tosh' is a bit precious from me. I'll strike that from the vocab unless striking an ironic stance.
Re: You / Dashboard.
I've wrestled with the same problem in design. I blame Flickr, because they've done You in the toolbar, and done it well. In our alpha version of AdHack (no longer online) we had Me in the global nav to house all the personal submenu items (profile, favorites, contacts, content). But people didn't really get it. Both in explicit feedback (emails, conversations) and implicit (clickstream data and analytics).
So in our Beta version (http://beta.adhack.com) we switched to Portfolio, which we felt more accurately reflected the nature and purpose of the site. I don't think that's a perfect solution either, but people seem to find it clearer.
In arguing for Dashboard I'd point out that even though the Global nav says You, each subnav item still needs has a Your possessive. To these picky eyes it feels a little half pregnant. Like the design understands its own limitation with You so overcompensates with all the Yours.
Alright, now I've personified the design. I think I'll cut it off there and simply make it a $0.02 offering. Good luck with the discussion!
Best,
James

You = Dashboard, please. You = Dashboard. I like the Dashboard but why is it called You and Dashboard? Could they be the same label? You is kinda tosh, really. I mean, it's not me. It's not you. It's just a label for my stuff. Which is the Dashboard too.

I like this idea. I tried to set up a free event and misunderstood the ways tickets could be setup. The distinction between donation tickets and free tickets was lost on me. Then once I'd set it up I couldn't find any way to edit the ticket type to free. As a result I may have used the F-word in an email.-

What do you think of this Get Satisfaction business? We're testing it out, and really, all that matters is that it works for you Alphanauts. So tell us if it does. Otherwise, like, how will we know?
