When I got the recipe for Florentines, I first of all did not consider them to be "cake," and on further review see that the word cake appears only in describing the rack on which to cool the cookies. I also noticed that they contained nuts. Since I'm looking to make a nice first birthday cake, I'm of course not going to put in nuts per ped's orders. So then I took away "tree nuts" and "peanuts" to come up with a more complete listing, thinking I'd get no matches at all. Instead, I get several delectable but eggy options.

FWIW, I'm going to see if I can adapt Nigella's birthday cake recipe from "How to Eat," which I own. (So, you know, yay for buying cookbooks.) Now I just need to see if applesauce can function as an egg substitute in a proper cake. Maybe applesauce and gelatin. I gotta figure out the necessary chemistry I lose from omitting egg whites, which are verboten for the under-12-month set.

Dietary restriction not effective at eliminating recipes
Search on "chocolate cake" and dietary restriction "egg free" yielded a number of egg-containing recipes.
