The problem all this time was not with flash itself but with the "crossdomain.xml" file which should reside on Twitter's server. Flash needs to load this file before it can load twitter feeds.
For unknown reasons, Twitter have removed this file but it seems that right now it's been replaced again, and flash widgets are working again.
Please Twitter, don't scare us like this anymore!

Where is Twitter's crossdomain.xml policy file? My flash-twitter app suddenly stopped working because this file isn't available anymore!
