    Einar Rønningen reported a problem in 42Tags on June 21, 2009 09:44:

    Einar Rønningen
Why some packages are missing from time to time.
A few times, when I've scanned some documents, 42Tags 'freezes'. When I restart 42Tags, all the latest scanned documents seems to have disappeared. They exist on my harddrive, but not in the program 'search'.
Now, my next collection number is 'collection80', and the last collection on the hard drive is 79. But the last Package in Packages.xml is '57'.
It seems that 42Tags edits the collection number (in 'General.xml') about every time I hit the 'new collection' -button, but the file 'Packages.xml' is left unchanged. At the last incident I lost about 20 Collections and a lot of work.
After some closer research, it seems that 'Packages.xml' only changes, not on program shutdown, but on computer shutdown. This gives a significant possibility of malfunction, since vital 42Tags-data is not written to the hard drive, but is just stored in RAM-memory for perhaps long amounts of time. (I almost never shut off my laptop.)

WHY NOT CHANGE THE PROGRAM? Maybe a much metter idea to make the program force data saving for every XX minutes, and also (of course) on program shutdown.

I also get this message from time to time: Value of '-1' is not valid for 'SplitterDistance'. etc... (see image) I do'nt know what it means, but if I follow up the screen and want to compose a mail, nothing in the screen seem to work.

So what do I do? Can I really trust this application?

    I've got some similar problems:
A few times, when I've scanned some documents, 42Tags 'freezes'. When I restart the program, all the latest scanned documents seems to have disappeared. They exist on my harddrive, but not in the program 'search'.
Now, my next collection number is 'collection73', but the last collection on the hard drive is 57. (Also, the last Package in Packages.xml is '57'.) It seems that the program edit the collection number every time I hit the 'new collection' -button, but the file 'Packages.xml' is written only on legal shutdown. At the last incident I lost about 20 Collections and a lot of work.
I also get this message from time to time: Value of '-1' is not valid for 'SplitterDistance'. etc...
I've contacted the support where I got the program, and they told me about the configuration files (.xml). I've tried to edit the General.xml (Collections next_package_id="73") and change the ID to 58, but 42Tags changes it back to 73 again, even if I restart my computer in between.
So what do I do? I don't feel I can trust this application.
I've also paid for an upgrade some time ago, but I'm not sure if it's activated yet.
