Thanks for the reply. I currently shorten with bit.ly and paste the URL into hootsuite when I'm scheduling tweets to avoid bombarding my followers all at once with a lot of links... I just think it would be nice to have the ability to have a choice of what service to shorten with, and even enter our own API keys so we can at least track our own results elsewhere.
HootSuite is great otherwise, and I really love the tweet scheduling.

Use non ow.ly short URLsI would really like the ability to use bit.ly links and other URL shorteners instead of just ow.ly. I dislike the top bar and masking of the landing URL and bit.ly doesn't do that. Using our own API keys for bit.ly to track url stats would be great and is the major thing stopping me from using hootsuite as a primary twitter client.

That would be perfectly fine with me. I know some people think "OMG text in the sidebar makes it ugly and terrible" but I don't see the problem with it. You know exactly what you're clicking on before you click it – elbirth, on April 22, 2009 16:37-

That's actually a really good idea for the design. I'd be quite happy with that, even with the additional mouse click (since each search wouldn't be on the sidebar on its own) – elbirth, on April 20, 2009 14:17

That might be nice for implementing a "recents" area for your searches to show the last 5-6 or so searches, but we've got dead space to the left already- why create another area to take up space before using what we've already got – elbirth, on April 20, 2009 13:15

The first thing I noticed about Tweetie was that, yes, it does feel quite "wide". The option to toggle the sidebar would be a great addition. The right side already shows the breadcrumbs for "timeline", "mentions", etc, so we would know where we're at in the app. From there, using the hotkeys to jump between views will make it feel very streamlined and minimalistic.

I can see why it could be frustrating if you're used to doing that with other apps, but honestly, it's not the job of another app to duplicate the usability of a competing app just because that one "trained" users to a certain way. If it's the better option then sure it's fine... but as it stands now, you use the spacebar to jump a full screen at a time, and the up/down arrow keys go tweet by tweet. This makes sense and works fine for me, so I'm happy. Of course, this isn't the case for everyone.

elbirth replied on April 20, 2009 12:04 to the problem "Keyboard can be ignored" in atebits:
I was just noticing something similar. It doesn't seem to be that the keyboard is being ignored, so much as that the focus gets changed and has different results.
In your example, after I hit the right arrow key to go into conversation view, if I hit the down arrow to scroll through the tweets, hitting the left arrow doesn't let me go back to the timeline. However, if I hit the up arrow to go back to the top and then once more to deselect all of the tweets, hitting left now takes me back to the timeline. Similarly, once back at the timeline, going up or down then hitting right makes it work again with going back to conversation view.

I like the premise behind this idea. Groups would be nice but I think the Tweetie devs have said they don't like a client-side implementation of this from what I recall. Being able to save searches to the left bar would be awesome. I have saved searches in Tweetie's iPhone app and miss having those on my Mac-

a type-ahead solution would be fantastic. I was thinking of this in terms of tab completion in the terminal, so I'd be happy with that. I tend to remember the names of the people I follow, but I could see how having a list to choose from might be helpful if you just know the person's real name but can't think of their Twitter name off-hand-
