I was receiving SMS messages for people I'm following, then randomly last night they stopped. I sent a message to 40404 and was successful. What's up with this?

I sent the verification code to 40404, but had no response. I tried sending a shortcode to Google, no response. My friend has Sprint and has no trouble with shortcodes. I called Sprint support and they acted like they had never heard of shortcodes or Twitter. What can I do?
