It seems logical to me that we be able to control comments on our own posts. Flagging is useful for terms violators, creeps, etc., but I think the original poster should simply be able to delete comments by others. I believe this to be a norm in social networking, and I have attempted/wished to do it several times.
emilycatherine replied on May 20, 2009 19:32 to the question "Can I flag inappropriate comments to posts?" in Brightkite:
There is a 'flag as inappropriate' link on my post, to the right of the 'comments' header. I tried to use it, but it popped up a window saying:
'To view this page, you need to log in to area “Web Password” on brightkite.com:80.'
It also says: Your password will be sent in the clear.' then gives user and password entry boxes.
What is this?? I am logged in and trying to flag a comment on my own post.

If you are online, you can post photos/notes to any location, even if you are not checked in there (not via SMS).
Simply use the past check-in, the Places list, or search option to find that place (where you'll see 'Check in here', 'Add to placemarks', & locator map at the top of the page).
Use the normal 'Post to this place' options for notes and photos.
When you post a photo or note, though the time/date will be current, it WILL post in that location.
I use this when I take photos with my real camera and upload them later.
(If you have already deleted the photo before you see the problem, you can even save it from Brightkite, repost it at the correct location, then delete the original post!)

In this case, I was confirmed to have checked in at the exact address via SMS reply, but when I look at my profile, it shows me checked in at just the street level.
I do not have an iPhone, so I do not have these chat-type interactions. – emilycatherine, on December 22, 2008 23:59-

Profile tags don't work like tags. Are they real? Will they be?Tags on user profiles are not links, can't use them to find common interest. Are they really tags or just about me words?
I'd love to be able to click on tags and find other users--I could discover other users who are vegan and see where they are going out to eat!
I see all these posts about people wanting groups, but just making the existing tags work as tags would be plenty for me. Seems like a good start before bigger things.

Tried again, no luck.
Existing placemark:
work
the office (Kansas City, MO 64153)
New placemark:
x [CrosstownStation]
1522 McGee St (1522 McGee St, Kansas City, MO 64108)
No label was created; it was added to the name. I would have to check in '@x [CrosstownStation]' and it would only display the address, not the label.

I did try again and get '@burrito bros' after several failed attempts to check in at their exact address. Intermittent search success, I guess. I was shocked as they have only been there for weeks and most places I try unsuccessfully to check in by business name are months or years old. – emilycatherine, on December 22, 2008 22:02

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I have tried both checking in with labels and placemarking with labels from both my phone and my computer.
I obviously use SMS when I am out, but when I happen to get back to a computer, like after lunch, I try repeatedly to use the search bar to do the same thing.
I have been unable to save custom names/labels/aliases for placemarks as well as addresses using the search bar on the web.
While I have a browser on my phone (sidekick) and can use Brightkite, the search bar's "Search" button does not respond on it.
I created my home and office placemarks using this command, so I know it has worked.
I have tried recently and I know it has been impossible to save a placemark on the website with a label, such as 'xt [Crosstown Station]. It always tells me it exceeds 20 characters, as if it is trying to save it all as the placemark name.
I have a lot of trouble checking in at addresses as well, making it tough to know what the problem is.
Yesterday I tried to check in @4700 Wyandotte St Kansas City, MO and without confirmation or reply, it checked me in @Wyandotte St, Kansas City, MO. This number-dropping happens a lot.
At this point I do not try to placemark or label, as it isn't the location I chose.
I will keep trying.
Can you post a template for checking in with a label and placemarking with a label, so we can be clear we are doing it correctly? I am baffled why this ablity to name locations & events is not part of the FAQ on using brightkite.
emilycatherine replied on December 22, 2008 21:30 to the idea "Custom alias for locations" in Brightkite:
this can usually be done with the label you want in brackets after the address -- @123 Street St. Altoona, PA [Mom's house]
I have been having trouble with this working lately, but it might work for you.
You can also do this when you placemark-- MARK moms [Mom's House]
Again, I have been having trouble with bracketed names but it is a standard option that, for some reason, is never mentioned in the FAQ, SMS guide, etc.
