Good to see the ning staff participation and hopeful signs re the E-mail Digests thread. Hoping this one will be deemed worthy of a response also ...-
eN0ch started following the idea "Email Digests" in Ning.

Thanks, Brian. I'll definitely support your E-mail digests idea.
I can't see the e-mail thing you're referring to re groups. I take it you mean "groups" as in the sub-groups created on one's ning network (gets rather confusing!)? But in any case, that won't really help us much. We're a very small circle, and we have one (sub-)group made up of about half of us. But what I'm concerned about on this thread is managing members of the (wider) network, some of whom aren't in any group.
eN0ch shared an idea in Ning on August 07, 2009 04:13:
More admin control optionsPersonally I'd like to see a lot more facility for network admins to control things, relying less on individual members to login and do stuff. We dumped Google groups in favour of Ning for our network because our many non-geek members were struggling with using Google. They're certainly finding Ning much easier. But there's one glaring exception ...
On Google and lots of other similar network platforms, the group admins can set a lot of things up without members needing to do stuff on the site. Plus - members get automatic e-mail notifications for nearly everything that happens on the site .. and for many basic activities members can do everything through their own e-mail interface or desktop client. In that respect Ning falls down a lot for networks inhabited by Luddites. So whilst the Ning interface is much more user-friendly, it becomes increasingly obvious through use that Ning takes a certain level of geekery pretty much for granted. Certainly it assumes that every member will regularly visit the site and take the time to find their way around.
e.g. When I first set up the network, I had to wait a fortnight for some members to get round to responding to the invite before I could do anything else with them. And then I had to give them detailed instructions - some even involved individual phone calls - explaining how to RSVP to an event, how to join a group I'd invited them to join, how to sign up for e-mail notifications, etc. Once they've clicked the right link or button everything's great ... but not all network members can do even that much unguided.
In contrast - you can set up a google group as admin by entering everyone's e-mail address, after which they each get an e-mail telling them they're now a member - not asking them to do something to become one. Thereafter, especially if all they do is share in discussions, they can just participate entirely through e-mail. Much for user-friendly at that level.
So I'd like as an admin to be able to a lot more stuff for members. If I can just get them into the network and set up their accounts and settings for maximum efficiency, everything's fantastic.

and IMO that last one should be selected by default – eN0ch, on August 07, 2009 03:47

OK - thanks, Phil. That's good to know. I obviously missed that. But can I add that it's pretty obscure and would be easily missed. I imagine many users (e.g. Richard & I!!) may never discover it.
Follow-on suggestions ...
• Put it at the top, not the bottom. e.g. next to the "+ Add" link.
• put the same on the main events, pages & notes pages at least - possibly the others too
• and/or on e-mail settings page under "Following Discussions, Blog Posts, and Groups" - add an option "all new discussions and blog posts"
eN0ch replied on August 07, 2009 01:54 to the question "E mail notifications" in Ning:
I absolutely agree! I've been running a ning network (which I created) for about a month now, and have only just realised that something as basic as discussions has no universal notification feature! This is a clanger for my network functionality, and I really can't believe that such a feature is missing. How are you supposed to generate interaction on a network if members only know about new discussion threads if they happen to visit the page sometime?
The only workaround I can identify is to instruct every network member that every time they start a new discussion they have to remember to click "share" > "more options" > "invite every member". Most of our members are Luddites, and I promised them this would be a very simple facility to use! Thry probably won't remember the above procedure, which means I'll have to make regular visits to the discussions page to add the share to every member thing myself to every new discussion. Not impressed.
IMHO this is a major missing feature. Please add it.
BTW 19 days since the OP and no response is hardly encouraging.

thanks sarah. at this stage I think I'll wait for the next update from ning support. hopefully I'll remember to post back here about how it goes. – eN0ch, on July 30, 2009 08:50

... and now tried re-embedding using embed code modelled on the embed code with the video uploaded by the ning staff person. Same result as before. Hmm ... ??? – eN0ch, on July 30, 2009 07:30
A comment on the problem "Can't embed SWF videos" in Ning:
Yeah, could be. But a ning support staff person has uploaded a YouTube (originally) video to my network - and that has a thumbnail and descriptive text that doesn't disappear.
Anyway ... maybe the ning staff person can help me further ... ?

OK, thanks again .. er .. um .. Baby. (Is that what I should call you??) Well I've just posted them in a blog post on my own self-hosted wordpress blog. They came up fine. But that's not a context where there's a list view of the videos , nor fields for entering descriptive stuff. So not sure how to test the current issues. – eN0ch, on July 30, 2009 07:02

Thanks! That was a huge help. At least now I've got the embed links (had no idea how much content those things have!). And I've got the movies embedded and displaying and playing correctly at a useful size.
The bad news: not all solved yet. The videos are still represented by generic icons rather than thumbnails. (Or is that a natural limitation of embedding versus uploading?) And more to the point - the descriptive data I enter still won't stick. I've put it in a comment box on each video page, so that will do for now I guess ...
Any further enlightenment? Thanks. – eN0ch, on July 30, 2009 03:19
A comment on the problem "Can't embed SWF videos" in Ning:
Forgot to mention .. I'm currently working with ning support to figure out why I can't get them to embed properly. I have them hosted at dropbox.com. (And in fact I'd prefer to keep them there and embed - assuming I can get it to work.) I can get a html text link to the file where the video should be, but no show with the video playbox thingy (whatever that video window thing with the play button is called) - just a blank space with the tiny text link beneath it. And the title, description & tag data won't stick - stays a while then defaults back to no title & blank fields.
Wondering whether it might have something to do with the width & height parameters or some of that geeky stuff - but that's beyond the limits of my geekery. – eN0ch, on July 30, 2009 01:28

Thanks for that tip. But in a way that just extends the perplexity. If it's possible to upload them to a blog post, then there's clearly no technical or server-related problem. So why on earth can you not upload them to the video section?! – eN0ch, on July 29, 2009 22:55
eN0ch reported a problem in Brainjuice on July 29, 2009 08:59:
Categories wrong posting to WordpressWhenever I post to my self-hosted WP blog from Blogo, the post comes up in the blog page as uncategorized. My tags appear correctly, but not my categories. If I then click on edit in Blogo - sure enough there it is with "uncategorized" as category. Sometimes that's the only category; other times there might be one of the categories I originally used and the "uncategorized" will be the other "category".
If I then try to correct it, I might get one or two of my intended categories - but "uncategorized" is still there. The only way I can then get rid of the "uncategorized" category is to edit it in the WP web interface.

Can't embed SWF videosSpeaking as one who is geeky in some areas but a total noob in others .... It would be really really nice if SWF could be added to the video formats that can be uploaded to Ning. Either that or supply some noob-friendly way of embedding SWF videos hosted elsewhere.
I'm using Ning to host a small organisation made up largely of folks more nooby than myself. I've created some how-to videos with the free version of Jing, but SWF is the only format available. I'm hosting them via dropbox. But I can't for the life of me get the embed thing to work. There's no playbox (or whatever the video window thing is called) and the details I type in to describe the video don't stick. Despite this the links to the SWF files do actually work and you can play them ... if you can find the links to click them ...
It would be so much easier if I could just upload these SWF files directly to Ning. My geekery is exhaused
