Primarily because of ego. Everyone wants to create their own media player, so instead of contributing to Rhythmbox and making it the best media player ever with iPod support and everything else, they waste their time duplicating all of the same functionality in a different way. Everyone pulls in different directions and the music players are adequate at most things, but not incredible at anything.
Endolith reported a problem in Trader Joe's on February 03, 2009 16:09:
Rice milk sucks compared to Rice DreamMy local Trader Joe's used to have Rice Dream and their own store brand rice drink. Now they only have the store brand, and it sucks. I'd rather have Rice Dream.

I've been using Rhythmbox, and although it can only watch one folder, this is fine since I can just create links to other folders within the watched one, even if those links point to other machines. – Endolith, on January 31, 2009 02:32

Is there a way to find out which Firefox extensions use up the most memory/CPU time?Is there a way to find out which Firefox extensions use up the most memory/CPU time? Like a process manager just for Firefox extensions?

A comment on the problem "missing jar file" in Mozilla:
Sure, I know about it. I remember seeing this error, but I don't have it anymore, so I'm not sure I remember what caused it.
Do you see it only with some commands and not others? Ones that have stuff like \/\/+(/*[)^]]+ in them? Paste the commands that don't work here.
Something simple like this works, right?
CmdUtils.makeBookmarkletCommand({
name: "Embed Flickr Photo",
url: "javascript:(function(){if(window.page_p)window.open('http://www.elsewhere.org/mbedr/?p='+window.page_p.id);%20else%20alert('No%20Flickr%20photo%20found.');})()"

Endolith shared an idea in Mozilla on January 20, 2009 19:46:
Ubiquity commands should have ancestors and descendantsSince anyone can make their own Ubiquity commands and upload them to the Herd, and these different commands can do the same thing, possibly with the same name, there should be a way to specify which commands evolved out of which other commands. If you modify someone's command for your own use, you'd specify the previous author and previous URL in the meta-information, and when it uploads to the Herd, this relationship would be taken into account.
If you look on the Herd for a "Last.fm artist" command, for instance, and see three different variations, it should be obvious from the tree structure that the commands are listed in that one of the commands is a newer updated version that evolved out of another, which is no longer maintained, and that the third was written independently.
If the commands are copyrightable, specifying the previous authors and version history is actually a legal requirement for some open source licenses (incompletely solved by options.contributors). So this wouldkill two... uh... solve two problems at once.

Endolith replied on January 20, 2009 19:29 to the idea "Ubiquity accessible outside Firefox browser" in Mozilla:
You don't really want Ubiquity itself to be accessible outside Firefox; you want a program that does the same thing as Ubiquity for your whole OS instead of just the web. There are lots of launchers and language-based interfaces like this already. We need a standardized cross-platform version that can be extended as easily as Ubiquity.
This is how I imagine the future of open source software. What's supposed to happen is that users download software, modify it for their own use, and then redistribute the changes, and "free software" is supposed to be important because it protects our ability to do this.
But 99% of people can't code at all, and consequently don't care a bit whether their software is open source or not. There are lots of users, and very few developers.
I imagine that in the future, we'll have much higher-level languages and (interactive) programming interfaces, almost like plain English. Instead of a complex process of filing bugs, making patches, etc, the commands that people create by combining other commands will be uploaded back to the central repository for others to use immediately, with trust metrics in place to keep people safe and maintain high quality of the routines.

Why are there all these "message attachments" when it looks like my image is inline.
It shows an attachment when you have inserted an image inline? That would be an improvement over Thunderbird 2, where it treats inline attachments differently from "attached" attachments.
An inline image could either be attached or hosted online, and it should be made clear to the user which is the case.-
