Thetime taken to deploy is ever a problem. The code is perhaps not complex, but it may be quite subtle, requiring many iterations across various guise of windows OS to be certain of deployment issues.
Patience is a virtue, and persistence is likely to be rewarded.
Bumptop have started the ballgame rolling,
with the concept of the3d desktop,
but just as significantly,
realdesktop showed that, in principle, the marketplace may not be far behind them. No doubt they are every bit as keen to get deployment underway...
The risk, as you say, is that the beta testing crew may lose heart.
But one must bear in mind, this is a public beta forum, and the bumptop team may need (in the light of realdesktop) to play some of the cards close to their chest.
On the other hand,
some of us arenow finding that our OS platforms are transitioning from current,
to legacy platforms (For example Windows 2000),
so some of us may no longer be in the vanguard of the likely candidates for beta testing.
In this regard I see an interesting position.
in the light of comments about vista,
both users and programmers,
it seems that it has had less than a 100% enthusiastic response from the customer base.
I have an open mind on this,
but continue to toy with linux keeping my options open.
At this stage I am not so convinced that vista is necessarily the way to go...
I have a fully licenced copy of vista,
but have not seen any overwhelming need to deploy this as yet...
and watching the progress in the linux world,
I am getting the feeling that 3d desktops will be appearing in this sphere also.
At the moment the Bumptop ethos is without competition, and by far the most promising environment.
But things do not ever remain the same.
Indeed,
reading between thelines on code overheads stated here,
it is not beyond the suspicion of man,
that Bumptop,
or something conceptually related
may be making an appearance on a Linux desktop.
real desktop was a reality check...
Bumptop it certainly isn't,
but if there are rival developments out there,
Bumptop are aware that by showing their interface publicly,
the starter gun was fired,
and the clock on deployment is ticking.
Bumptop will deploy to the beta testers as fast as is reasonably practical.

a few months later, I'm still not a beta tester.
If this forum is a part of the feedback loop when why is there no more info coming on whats going on? Starting to look like people have stopped to write here to.. might that be a sign of everyone happily using the beta and waiting for the release or is it the beginning of the "i could not care less" campaign.

This forum is part of that of that feedback loop :) We don't give specifics about release dates but I can help with the other questions. Initial platforms supported will be Windows. Mac support is planned afterward, Linux is a possibility but based on demand. Filenames are displayed as you might expect and with a label placement algorithm. See a recent video of the interface here: http://www.ohgizmo.com/2008/04/10/bumptop-3d-desktop/ We will include visual customization options in a future release. Thanks for your interest! – Anand Agarawala, on July 04, 2008 02:03

How about a timeline or planned release date?
What about some information about what 'ramping up' entails?
To be fair, you want people to be interested in what you're producing, and they have shown interest. Where's the feedback loop?
Do you expect to release in the next three months?
What platforms will definitely be supported?
How are file properties going to be displayed (filename?)
WIll themes, skins, icon packs be supported?
Is Bumptop related to this : http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y200...
Or this : http://tayasui.com/Grape.html
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it involves a lot of work, and kudos to you all, but the silence is noticeable.
Be well.

I admire Google's approach. Keep in mind they also kept Gmail in private beta for 2 years internally before releasing it to the public. ;) And its important to use too that we release something of very high quality, especially given the demand and anticipation. That said I'm really sorry to hear you're losing interest. I do appreciate that its a long wait, we're ramping up as fast as we can! If there's anything else we can do for or other feedback you have please email us at feedback@bumptop.com – Anand Agarawala, on July 03, 2008 13:03

If I do it at 1 picture my CPU gets up to 20% (single core) in the transition of the picture. – YoungScripter, on July 02, 2008 17:56

Cool. Remember you can zoom the view to just the back wall by double-clicking on it! – Anand Agarawala, on June 30, 2008 23:32

Thanks again. I currently only use picture folders on my HD, a different folder for each Frame. The transition of the pictures is very smooth, just requires most of my CPU to do it all at once. – Kuurus, on June 30, 2008 17:25

Thanks. I would probably use one texture for the side walls and a different one for the back wall. When I double click on an image and then scroll through them with the arrows keys, and the camera travels from one side wall to the other, was what gave a really good 3d impression of the walls and desktop. This made me think of having the camera in the center looking at the back wall, and being able to pan it around to view the side walls. – Kuurus, on June 30, 2008 17:22

Good idea! For now you can manually tweak this in the settings.xml. (SysTray>Settings XML). g.photoFrameImageDuration is the tag. Default is 30seconds, but this is a global value for all the frames. Curious, what sorts of frames do you have up on your walls. Do all 7 point to folders on your HD or do some point to RSS feeds/Flickr? – Anand Agarawala, on June 30, 2008 12:51

Good ideas! We think customizable walls would be cool too and its on our todo list. If you double-click on the walls you can zoom into them to get the sort of view I think you're talking about. Double-click back on the floor to get to the regular view In terms of customizing wall textures, would you want to set each wall to a specific texture, or just 1 texture for all the walls? – Anand Agarawala, on June 30, 2008 12:48
