I think Tweetie is far away from being developed 'in a vacuum'. There is obviously a thoughtful concept behind tweetie's user interface and a clear reason for the separate tweetwindow. img.ly is a new image sharing service, which comes with some important features, that are missing at twitpic. It has a shorter URL. it shows top viewed pictures. it automatically tags images, whenever a hashtag is used.
It also has a mobile frontend (for iphone, ideal to see the pictures without the need to zoom, etc).

It also shouldn't be a problem to implement img.ly, as it has an identical API to the twitpic API, except for the link.
