Hi Ed,
It looks like the XPS 400 doesn't have integrated FireWire ports. For this system, you'll need to buy an add-in card. Here's an inexpensive one:

You can probably get them even cheaper with a little digging.

Eric Burns replied on November 16, 2009 21:35 to the question "how many people can view the recording at the same time with same user ID?" in Panopto:
Hello Muhammad,
This sounds like a bandwidth problem. An unlimited number of users may view at the same time with the same user ID, but each viewer needs between 300 and 500 kb/s of bandwidth. If your connection to the server is not sufficient, the viewers will see frequent pauses during playback.
Please email support@panopto.com if you need more help solving this problem. Thanks!

Hi Sascha,
I don't remember specific models, but I recall seeing a few cameras that advertise the ability to use operate as video sources by installing manufacturer-supplied drivers. Another option is to use a USB2.0 capture device that converts an analog S-Video signal to a live capture source. If you are stuck, please let me know and I can poke around some more.
Thanks,

Eric Burns replied on October 29, 2009 21:37 to the question "Video capture choices with HDMI question" in Panopto:
Hi Randy,
I've never used Matrox capture hardware, but in my experience BlackMagic makes good equipment. I've used one of their component HD capture cards, but never HDMI. The WDM drivers and DirectShow support were fairly solid and you are likely to get good results. However, please be aware that you won't be able to use HD capture as primary video - right now, the recorder assumes that sources above SD resolution are intended to be secondary sources (like chalkboard cameras, VGA capture, and document cameras).
If you'd like to discuss options for primary stream capture in HD, please email support@panopto.com and we can set up a call.
Thanks,
Eric

Eric Burns replied on October 29, 2009 02:54 to the question "Pre-Recorded Mac Video Uploads - Format?" in Panopto:
Hi Chael,
Any format other than WMV/VC1 will be transcoded for playback in Silverlight. That means that our back-end transcoder needs to be able to read the MP4 files in order to properly encode them, and that file reader is based on QuickTime. If QuickTime 7 for Windows can play your file, there's a good chance that it will transcode properly, but please be aware that this is officially unsupported. We're looking at our options for CourseCast 3.0, but right now we can't make any guarantees about content that wasn't produced with either the Mac or PC version of the Panopto Recorder.

Eric Burns posted an update in Panopto on October 21, 2009 23:52:
Announcing Panopto CourseCast 2.2All,
Panopto recently released CourseCast 2.2 to new and existing service contract subscribers. For those who haven't yet upgraded or are still using CourseCast 2.1 Core, here are some of the major features in CourseCast 2.2 that might interest you:
* Panopto Recorder for Mac - CourseCast 2.2 brings our recording capability to Mac users, offering audio/video capture, PowerPoint and Keynote support, and high-resolution screen capture.
* Scheduled Recordings - In addition to user-initiated recordings, CourseCast now supports automatic scheduled recordings that begin without input from the presenter. Any Windows computer that can run the Panopto Recorder can act as a scheduled recorder, and all PowerPoint presentations and on-screen activities will be recorded automatically. Administrators can manage and monitor scheduled recordings across an entire campus from a single web browser.
* Advanced Podcasting - CourseCast now creates MP4 podcasts that mix video, audio, slides, and screen captures automatically for a first-class mobile viewing experience.
* Offline Viewer - Thanks to our vocal users, it's now possible to download Panopto presentations and watch them offline with the same rich playback experience as our existing in-browser player.
* LMS Integration - CourseCast 2.2 now integrates tightly with the Blackboard LearnTM Platform as well as the open-source Moodle LMS platform. These LMS plug-ins automatically publish new recordings to course pages, allow administrators to populate LMS courses into CourseCast with a few mouse clicks, and even let LMS users sign on to CourseCast with their existing LMS credentials.
* Recorder "Pause" button - You asked for it, we built it. Now you can pause while recording, and if you pause by mistake you can even go back and recover your content.
As always, there are a host of small features, fixes, and improvements across the product. Thanks again to all of our GetSatisfaction users... keep up the suggestions!

Eric Burns replied on October 20, 2009 18:35 to the question "screen capture lock and freeze" in Panopto:
Hi Bob,
Would you mind sending a link to the presentation to support@panopto.com? I'd like to take a look and see if I can learn more from the screen capture, specifically whether this is caused by a bug or by heavy system load.
It's possible for any real-time capture stream to drop frames if the processor is under heavy load. For example, if you're opening a large file or starting a heavyweight program (Word or PowerPoint, for example), this can often consume all of your system's resources for several seconds. If that's the case, the screen capture compressor will be "starved" of resources during that time and will be forced to drop some or all of the incoming frames. The best way to ensure a high-quality capture is to close any unnecessary programs while you're giving your presentation.
We are working on improving the efficiency of our screen capture compression in our next release, making it more resilient to sudden spikes in load, but the underlying requirement (enough CPU time to actually record images) is common to all screen capture software.

Eric Burns replied on October 20, 2009 00:01 to the question "Can we set up a folder for access without Username or Password?" in Panopto:
Hi,
If you click on the "settings" link on a folder in the "Presenters" interface, then uncheck "Limit viewer access to the following viewers by default", the folder will become public. Sessions within the folder can still override public permissions by specifying their own access controls, so you can have a public session in a private folder and vice versa.
Hope this helps,
Eric
Eric Burns replied on October 19, 2009 19:04 to the question "Pop up evaluation survey" in Panopto:
Hi Nigel,
If you can create a tinyURL (or other URL shortener) to your survey site and use it as the first line on a slide (or replace a slide caption using the editor), the link will become clickable in the table of contents. This isn't a perfect solution, but it does give you a way to link directly from a Panopto recording to a survey form. Does this help?

Eric Burns replied on October 16, 2009 06:48 to the question "Recorder as a portable application?" in Panopto:
Hi Randy,
This is definitely an important use case. We believe it's possible with a few small tweaks. Already in 2.2, if a few registry keys - server name, recording folder - can be pre-populated on the target machine and .NET 3.5 is installed, it's possible to use the Recorder from a USB drive just by copying the contents of "Program Files/Panopto Recorder" to the drive. We'll also look into our options for making this simpler in the next release of CourseCast.
Thanks!
Eric
Eric Burns replied on September 23, 2009 23:19 to the question "Changing default recording directory" in Panopto:
Hi Vlad,
The recording folder setting is stored in a system-level registry key that is shared by the recorder, which runs under the account of the user that launches it, and the background upload service, which runs as a service (i.e. administrator). As a result, setting or modifying this value requires administrative privileges.
We are working on an update to the recorder in the next few months to fix a few small bugs and add some polish and a few small features. We can add an install-time setting for the output folder. Alternatively, it is possible for an ActiveDirectory domain administrator to remotely set this registry value on all machines in a domain, so this is one way of solving this problem across a large user base.
All users of the Hosted platform share the same software version, so our options for customizing this on Hosted are limited. If you're considering an on-premises deployment of Panopto, we might be able to work something out. If you're interested in going that route, please contact support@panopto.com.
Thanks!

Eric Burns replied on September 23, 2009 21:11 to the problem "Character encoding after editing" in Panopto:
Hi Fabio,
Thanks for the kind words. This is a bug in the existing version of the editor: unicode characters are mangled by the editor, which is our one remaining non-Unicode component.
We are working on another small update to our recorder that fixes a few small bugs like this. That should happen in the next few months, but in the meantime if you are under a support contract and running a deployed version of the software (versus Hosted) we can apply a small patch that will cause the server to ignore caption changes from the Editor. You'll lose the ability to edit the captions, but it will preserve your character encoding intact. This is a temporary fix but should resolve your problem until we update the Recorder.
Please email support@panopto.com if you'd like to proceed. Thanks for your patience!
