Eric Burns replied on September 01, 2009 18:19 to the question "How can I advance Powerpoint without switching between it and Panopto?" in Panopto:
As long as the PowerPoint checkbox is checked and you are recording, Panopto will capture every PowerPoint slide change while you are in full-screen slideshow mode. You don't need to switch back to the application - just start your presentation and go, and Panopto will do the rest. If you have any trouble with this, please contact support@panopto.com.
Hope this helps!

Hi Dean,
This is really interesting. Are you using a MacBook in OS X with the Macintosh recorder or in Windows with the Windows recorder? We don't do any explicit downsampling that I'm aware of, and we take anything that could impact audio quality extremely seriously.
I'd love to speak with you in more detail about what you're experiencing. If you can spare some time, please email support@panopto.com and they can arrange a meeting.
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Randall,
Have you already tried this device without success? If it acts like a standard video capture device (WDM driver, specifically) then it should work with Panopto. Try it with Windows Media Encoder:

Eric Burns replied on July 30, 2009 20:41 to the question "Podcast Statistics?" in Panopto:
Hi Will,
We don't have a mechanism for this right now, but it seems like a logical extension of the feature. This is a request we've heard a few times now. We already have a feature request in our database, so hopefully this is something we can do in a near-term release without a lot of trouble.
If you want to get fancy or just can't wait, I can tell you how to read this from the analytics database yourself if you are interested... drop me an email if so.

Eric Burns replied on July 24, 2009 18:40 to the question "Has anyone tried VGA>HDMI as a cheaper alternative to Datapath/Epiphan?" in Panopto:
Hi Sascha,
I've worked with Blackmagic cards in the past and found them to be very high quality. It *should* work as a secondary (or even primary) capture source with Panopto, but we have't tested this yet. I'd be happy to work with you to get this going if you can get them to give you an evaluation unit. Also, some laptops (and even some high end desktop video cards) have HDMI output built in.

Eric Burns replied on July 02, 2009 22:14 to the question "When will a Web-Based editor be available?" in Panopto:
Unfortunately, this feature took a back seat to some of our other priorities (comprehensive LMS integration, advanced podcasts, Mac recorder application) and will make our next release (date to be announced). Please accept our sincere apologies for the delay.
In the interim, recordings produced on a Mac can still be edited through the Windows recorder/editor, but I understand that this is not the solution you are looking for.
Thanks for being patient with us,

Eric Burns replied on June 23, 2009 21:10 to the question "Setting default permissions for recordings" in Panopto:
Hi Andrew,
At the moment, there is no built-in way to do this. It is possible to have individual sessions override the folder-level permissions, but this would really only affect viewing rights and, if students have "creator" access to the course, could be overridden.
Another school took a different approach: each student was given his or her own folder, and the instructors were added as creators to all student folders. This will give you the right permission scheme at a cost of increased set-up time. If you are doing this as a pilot, that should fit the bill for now and give you an opportunity to see whether this model is something you want to use in the future.
We don't have immediate plans to add this sort of rights model, but I will file a bug and we will start investigating our options for our next release. If you'd like to discuss further, please let me know.
Thanks,
Eric

Hi David,
We have not yet put Blackboard Vista on our roadmap. However, we have recently developed an internal API that we have been using for LMS integration with Blackboard, Moodle, and Angel. If you are a supported customer and are interested in discussing this API further, please email support@panopto.com and we can arrange a brief phone conference.
Thanks!

Eric Burns replied on June 12, 2009 18:20 to the question "Can the Mac recorder capture multiple video sources?" in Panopto:
Hi Andrew,
I'd like to learn a little bit more about your recording configuration, if you're willing. In its "version 1" incarnation, the Mac Recorder is primarily focused on two capture scenarios: Mac-user presenters who want to capture their screen and slides natively without additional hardware, with the video stream recorded from another recorder (for example, a videographer PC), and Mac users who want to produce complete video/screen/ppt presentations without involving a Windows system.
This doesn't mean that this is off the table in the longer term, just that we haven't had a lot of requests yet for the more exotic recording scenarios supported on the Windows version of the recorder. I'd love to speak with you briefly about your use case if you can spare the time. If so, please email support@panopto.com and we can schedule an appointment.
Thanks,
Eric
Eric Burns replied on June 08, 2009 19:02 to the question "Browser Security issues when downloading Panopto Recorder" in Panopto:
Hi Joanna,
We're very interested in figuring out what's going on so that we can make the installation process even easier. Would you be willing to ask those students to describe the problems they ran into and send a brief summary to support@panopto.com? We may be able to spot a pattern or detect something about the installation process that we can improve.
Thanks,
Eric
Eric Burns replied on June 08, 2009 17:00 to the question "Browser Security issues when downloading Panopto Recorder" in Panopto:
Hi Joanna,
In general this is a pretty straightforward process, and most people don't encounter any roadblocks. Most browsers don't block downloads of EXE files unless there is some sort of group security restriction in place or if they have manually raised their security settings. All users should, at minimum, have administrative privileges to whatever system they intend to install the recorder on.
Please let us know if you need more clarification.
Thanks,
Eric
Eric Burns replied on June 08, 2009 16:45 to the question "Mac recorder" in Panopto:
Hi Marqis,
The release date of the first public version of the Mac Recorder is still early July, along with CourseCast 2.2. It's probably not a good idea to put it into production with real recordings until then. However, we would certainly love your feedback on the Mac Recorder if you are interested in participating in the current private beta; at the very least, this would be an opportunity for your Mac-using faculty member to tell us whether he or she would be comfortable using the new software.
Thanks,
Eric
Eric Burns replied on June 02, 2009 17:06 to the question "How are viewer notes supposed to be used?" in Panopto:
Hi Bill,
The short answer is that anonymous notes (in CourseCast 1.5 and 2.0) became "channels" once we added notes for authenticated users. Multiple viewers, both authenticated and anonymous, can take notes in a channel, and those notes will be seen by everyone who participates in the channel. It is not realtime chat, so notes from users other than yourself will only show up when you reload the viewer or set the channel name.
You can take private notes under an authenticated user name, and nobody can see them but you. You can also make these public, which lets other viewers see them but not modify them. (Many schools use this for transcription on the cheap.)
This gives you essentially three notes use cases: channels, personal notes that are private, and personal notes that are public.
Here's a more visual explanation:

Eric Burns replied on May 28, 2009 22:06 to the question "Where, oh where, has my video gone? DVD segment shown on Windows Media Player not captured." in Panopto:
Hi Sasha,
The "wind down during capture" approach sounds interesting. I'll investigate our options here, and if it looks like a possibility then we will include it in a future release. Thanks for researching this!
(By the way, I believe this is no longer a problem on Windows Vista and 7, at least when Aero is enabled.)
