Yes, that has been a problem for quite some time including the new version 3.2. Since Apple wasn't able to fix it in one of their usual bugfix updates the problem must be somewhere deep in Safari's architecture and not easily solved without rewritting Safari. I haven't been able to use the preview release of Safari 4 yet but my hope is that they will be able to fix this bug for the new major version.
I'm curious if this problem also occurs on the iPhone, since it only features 128 MB RAM, which would run out Safari Mobile in a couple of minutes.
