While it may be fun to complain, essentially we're looking at a currently free service that is at the forefront in a communications revolution. It's like complaining about the reliability of your Model A car 100 years ago, except you paid big bucks for that.
We're at a critical juncture, however, and stability & reliability obviously need to be improved quickly, or Twitter will be a footnote - Web2.0's Edsel.
So the real question is: How can the Twitter community help???
Every day there's a new conference or blog re: the power of social networks, open source communities, mining the cognitive surplus, ad infinitum. How about practicing what we preach?
Twitter.com, what do you need?
Twitter users, what can you provide?
Let's solve the problem rather than bitching at what I guess is a rather stressed out tech crew.-

curious what the slow down was. I'm beginning to see suspected bot followers phishing for return followers, like this one...

exador23 shared an idea in Twitter on May 19, 2008 01:46:
Similar or Linked Tweets (self-organized social groups)Self Organizing Tweets!
I can imagine the addition of "similar" or "linked" tweets over there on the right of the screen. Each tweet that you post, pulls up random or most recent similar tweets based on a search algorithm perhaps with different weights given to certain words.
Each tweet then becomes an instantaneous opportunity to utilize the potential for community support, action, development, etc ~in the moment you're interested and motivated~. At the least it fosters the ability to link to others around the world that share your interest so your main social network can grow and become more diverse and robust.
But here's the kicker: That's where you put the advertising. As long as it's clearly marked as such, it's actually the most likely scheme yet to get me to click on a known ad (and I'm pretty saavy at advertising avoidance.)
I wouldn't turn down any profit kickback ;-)
A comment on the idea "Publicly showing @replies" in Twitter:
that explains a lot. thank you. now that things are a ~little~ clearer, I'll have to re-think tweet strategies. I tend to use the swoosh, but then might send another @ free tweet or two leap-frogging off the topic. that must really be confusing my followers if most aren't getting the original @ reply. my brain hurts. – exador23, on May 18, 2008 19:32

It took me a while to figure out that the default pref setting is to only see replies of people you're following. This doesn't make sense. You see them anyway in your timeline.
I actually don't see the point in even offering the option. replies should get to the @ tweeps unless they block you (due to abuse). Isn't conversation the overarching goal of twitter??-
