Ok, got it. I was confused about what the text meant below the sign in form — now I understand that you were only restricting the icons that you show. That's fine. – Chris Messina, on February 01, 2010 19:17

Sure: I mean that there are restrictions on which OpenID providers you can use to signin. I suppose I understand why you might restrict that, but I'm curious why you have? – Chris Messina, on January 29, 2010 23:42

Well, the socialoomph.com seems to be using OpenID in a very strange way. It looks like you won't need an OpenID to register and use their service.
In any case, if you already have a Google, Yahoo, AOL, or MySpace account, you can use any of those accounts as an OpenID. Would you prefer to use one of those or something else as your OpenID? (To help you decide, you should use an OpenID provider that you trust — like you would choose a credit card provider that you trust.) – Chris Messina, on January 25, 2010 03:52

You'll need to follow up with Windows Live or RPX/Janrain, since every service determines what data it requires independently. It could be that the service(s) that you're trying to sign in to with your Windows Live account requires access to your contacts — but that's not something that I can help you with.
It's up to you whether or not you want to provide access to your contacts.

Chris Messina replied on January 23, 2010 02:46 to the question "How to use Gmail or Yahoo! account to log into WordPress site offering OpenID login?" in OpenID Foundation:
First, you'll need to do a couple things to activate your Yahoo or Google OpenIDs:
1. Create a Google Profile: http://www.google.com/profiles/me
1a. If you don't want to create a Google Profile, your Google OpenID is: https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/ud
2. Activate your Yahoo! OpenID: http://openid.yahoo.com/
Your Yahoo OpenID will look something like https://me.yahoo.com/[your_username]
You should now know your Google or Yahoo OpenID.
3. Depending on the way WordPress is setup — you may need to create a conventional account with a username and password FIRST, and then *associate* your Google or Yahoo OpenID with this existing account.
That way, the next time you try to sign in with the OpenID that you already associated with an account, WordPress will know which account to give you access to.
If you try to sign in with your OpenID WITHOUT associating a conventional account, a brand new account might be created that won't be connected to your conventional account.
If you're using the WordPress OpenID plugin, you can find your OpenID settings on this page:
http://[Your WordPress blog URL]//wp-admin/users.php?page=your_openids
On that page, you can associate as many OpenIDs as you want — meaning you can link up your Google AND Yahoo OpenIDs to your existing WordPress user account.
Hope that helps.
Chris Messina replied on January 19, 2010 19:15 to the question "So this is all just a scam right ?" in OpenID Foundation:
CometID is run by and independent organization unaffiliated with the OpenID Foundation. If you are concerned about their business practices, you should get in touch with them.
OpenID is a technology, like email. Many people may provide OpenIDs without getting permission from a central group. It's up to you to choose who your provider is. It's certainly not a scam, and does not collect email addresses for invading anyone's privacy.

Ah, I see.
To the best of my knowledge, this has not been developed yet. I'll ask on code@openid.net. – Chris Messina, on January 13, 2010 15:58
