Yay, Nate! This worked for me too. (Note, you need to "Save Target As" rather than "Save Image As.") THANK YOU! – family, on August 30, 2009 14:03

Adrian, your problem IS the same as mine. There's no Xmarks folder in my Firefox extensions folder either. The folder that's there is for a DIFFERENT add-on that I tried, to ensure that I am able to install OTHER Firefox add-ons.

Since last posting, I've tried uninstalling Google Gears (something one post ID'd as a possible conflict) but that didn't help either.

I sure would love to hear back from the Support folks here, to try anything else that might work!!

Eric, thanks for taking this on.

    To answer your questions:
    1. I went to Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions\ and found the folder empty.
    2. Yes, I do have permission to write to the folder. (Created and deleted a temp folder as a test.)
    3. Yes, I can (and did) install other FF add-ons.

    Today:
    1. I temporarily turned off Windows Defender malware protection.
    2. With FF closed, I deleted 3 extensions.* files (.cache and 2 others), again, just in case, since elsewhere FF suggests doing so if a program won't install.
    3. I successfully installed another FF add-on, UnsortedBookmarks, and now a folder for that add-on appears in my FF extensions folder.

....Got the same result as usual: I follow instructions to "restart FF to install" after downloading Xmarks, but then Xmarks isn't installed.

Let me know what to try, look at, report, whatever!

My problem is still unresolved. Tried many suggestions I've read here, and I've more recently posted in reply to Warren's "Cannot install. Cannot sync."

I'm running FF 3.5.2 on Vista 32-bit, and I've gotten the same result (that is, no Xmarks) whether trying to install Xmarks 3.3.2 or 3.3.3.

Some update apparently caused my Xmarks to just go away, and I haven't been able to reinstall it. I click to install Xmarks, but after I follow instructions to restart FF to complete the Xmarks installation, Xmarks is just not there. Xmarks is a very useful program! I want it back.

    Nate:

As you know from my "Xmarks Went Away" post, I'm having the same trouble Warren has reported here. After reading Warren's stuff, I uninstalled Firefox 3.5.2 (choosing to remove all my personal stuff, including the bookmarks I had wanted to sync!). I reinstalled Firefox 3.5.2, and I STILL don't see Xmarks after following instructions to "restart Firefox to install." Warren's problem went away when he got updated from 3.5.1 to 3.5.2. Didn't help me.

I went to Firefox > Tools > Error Console. Here's what I see:

    X uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) 9Ins(PrefBranch.clearUserPref]" nsresult: "0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://dotnetassistant/content/bootstrap.js :: BootStrapDotNetAsssitantExtension :: line 52" data: no]

Assistant is misspelled in the error log.

Next, I see (lots of times, probably every time I tried unsuccessfully to reinstall Xmarks):

Unknown property 'border-radius'. Declaration dropped. https://addons.mozilla.org/css/amo200... Line: 1

And there are similar-looking errors interspersed, such as "Error in parsing value for 'adding-left'. Unknown property...filter, border, zoom, border-top-right-radius, bottom, left, etc.

I really, really want Xmarks back!

    Thanks. – family, on August 23, 2009 01:25

Well, I don't know enough to answer all your questions. Yes, I have administrator rights. I tried more stuff, but no success, such as: For Webroot antivirus, I went to "gamer mode" to lower all but the executables (?) shield, for Windows Defender, I temporarily turned off the services shield. I even went so far as to finally install SP2 for Vista. I tried some things after reading others' similar posts here: I installed another Firefox add-on, and I first disabled and then removed the Microsoft .NET Framework "Helper for Firefox" extension that gets snuck in when .NET is updated. Rebooting and creating a new Firefox profile didn't work.

What now? I miss my Xmarks!

    Thanks.

Nate: Thanks for your reply, but still no fix. I created a new profile (which, of course, opens with none of my preferences or bookmarks), but I still couldn't get Xmarks to install. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox 3.5.2 (which thankfully saved my preferences and bookmarks), and I tried allowing various levels of cookies, but STILL the same issue: Message says to restart Firefox to complete installation of Xmarks, but nothing changes.

Can you suggest anything else to try? – family, on August 19, 2009 01:20

    Xmarks went away
I went to sync Xmarks then realized it wasn't in my Notifications toolbar. It wasn't under Tools > Xmarks either. It wasn't even on my installed programs list.

I tried to reinstall Xmarks, both from the Firefox add-ons and from My.Xmarks website (two different-looking filenames), but neither one did anything after the required Firefox restart.

Is this due to some recent upgrade, of Firefox, or Microsoft, or my Webroot antivirus? Could be anything!

So how can I get Xmarks back on this computer?
