in my case I still not able to make a backup of my iphone, the backup is freezing and it's what caused the full freezing of Itunes immediately when I connected my phone.

Somebody on another forum says that he soft reset his phone, I think what it means is he just reapply the 2.2.1 firmware and put back his backup.

I don't want to do that myself, but maybe it's a solution who could work for you?

Try to start Itunes before connecting your iphone/ipod
Go to edit - preferences - devices and delete backup
connect your iphone/ipod

Also the freeze can be the Backup not able to work, just click on the X on the right on "Backuping Iphone" to cancel the backup.
