    Hi Harry,

If you'd like, you can read up on some of the new Carousel 5.2 features on my blog: http://blog.trms.com/john

And at the moment, I'd put us in the mid-to-late August range for a release date. That could change, if something catastrophic crops up during the beta period, but so far, things are looking good.

    JJ,

Thanks for the quick reply. After looking around a little more, a lightbulb went off: I started wondering if I was seeing the other version of this stuff that I had heard about. Do you have any documentation about the entire RSS/Atom capabilities of Carousel 5.2? I think this is one of the most interesting parts of Carousel and am looking forward to using the improvements. Was that August 1 or August 31? :-) -- HF – Harry Forsdick, on July 25, 2008 21:21

    RSS Questions
I have several questions about RSS Bulletins

1.`One of the feeds I want to use seems to have non-standard field names.

    </feed>

On the second page of the RSS bulletin specification there are a series
of field labeled with names like:

    #ChannelTitle#
    #ChannelPubDate#
    #ChannelCopyright#
    #ItemTitle#
    #ItemDescription#

The initial values for each of those fields is the label itself. For
the above example my assumption was that I could replace the default value
for the #ChannelTitle# field with #FeedTitle#. The complete set of
values for the fields would be:

    #FeedTitle#
    #FeedUpdated#
    #FeedRights#
    #EntryTitle#
    #EntrySummary#

I assumed with these settings, I would get a reasonable display.

Well, when I do this and wait, all I get when I click on the
"Preview:RSS feed" icon is a display that says:

This RSS bulletin has not been rendered yet.
    Feed URL: http://www.wickedlocal.com/lexington/...

When I view the URL in a browser, it returns the example above just
    fine.

So, I am puzzled... Of course, there could be many different things I
am doing wrong. But I don't know which one(s).

    2. How often does the server check to see if the RSS feed has changed?

    3. Is there anyway to control how dates are rendered. For example, in the above
sample, here is the representation of a date:

    2008-07-25T06:16:09Z

I would like to represent this in my display as

    Friday, July 7, 2008 at 2:16am

which I believe is the same time in the EDT timezone.

Can this be done in the Carousel software?

    Hi Harry,

The dates you are seeing are indeed correct, we imported all of our content from our old forum system to this one, so all of the historical information is available for searching. All of the dates were preserved during the transfer.

I'd say that a decent amount of information available about RSS is still accurate, it hasn't changed all that much since it was introduced. If you have specific questions about RSS that aren't addressed, feel free to create a new topic, or, you can post a reply to an existing topic and it'll get "bumped up" to the top so we'll see it.

    Hope this helps!

I've been searching around this forum for answers to my RSS questions. Frequently I find topics containing RSS that are marked as being asked recently and then see replies that are described as being 3 years old. Normally, when I see advice that is 3 years old, I ignore it because surely things have changed since this answer was generated. Is there something screwed up with the dates of these postings?

I too am very happy that this blog has been started and looking forward to spending many (maybe too many) hours looking through it to see if there are ways I can improve my operational use of Cablecast and Carousel. Of course I will throw out my ideas on what I need and feel you folks should jump at doing (since it was my idea and it must be good.) Thanks to all of you at TRMS for all of your help.

Hey Harry, I'm not sure exactly how that error was caused. I'll have to hunt it down in our logs. I just tried doing what you described, and it worked for me. I hope it works for you! Try this link to do the search I just did: http://getsatisfaction.com/trms/searc...

    Hi Harry,

I can't speak to the specific error, but if you're looking for our info on RSS, you can browse our topics by tags. On the right side of the page, there's a list of popular tags, including RSS.

I hope this helps for now. Hopefully the GSFN team can track down the error.

    Hi Harry, welcome! :)

I think your analysis is spot on. The internet is pushing companies to be more open and honest with their clients, and that new level of transparency is frightening for a lot of companies.

Personally, I love transparency. I've used tools like GetSatisfaction to interact with the companies who make the products I use, and I tell you, it is so supremely rewarding and satisfying to see your input be considered, debated, and implemented. Strangely enough, I also appreciate it when I see an idea of mine rejected. If a company cares enough about their product to say "no," well, they obviously have a vision and a direction, and are firm in their convictions as to what the product's place in the world is. In either case, I've participated in the process to make the product better in some way. I like that. :)

As a customer, I want to know that there is a team of passionate people standing behind a product or service. I want to know their names. I believe that having this level of openness instills trust between a customer and a company. It's gotten to the point that if I notice that a company doesn't have a blog (at the very least), well, that's generally the end of my relationship with them.

That's why I've been working so much on providing the already strong TRMS community with additional ways to interact with us, or at the very least, to keep up on what's going on. Tightrope now has blogs (including several individual blogs for our staff), a live chatroom, this Get Satisfaction site, plus you can follow us on Twitter and, soon, Facebook. :)

I want everyone to know that Tightrope isn't a faceless corporation that just sells boxes. We love what we do, we love working with our customers, and you won't find a more passionate bunch of people in this space than us. Our opinions are strong, and we like it that way! :)

As far as using Get Satisfaction goes, I'll be writing a quick "how to" in the next day or so. But for now, to search for a topic, you can start "asking a question" in the box at the top of the topics page, and as you type it will start to return some possible matching topics. Additionally, there is a small topic search box on the right side of the topics page, a bit below our company logo. Hopefully that's enough to get you started until I can write something more thorough.

    Thanks again for your input!

    John, et. al.,

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Harry Forsdick and I work with LexMedia, the cable access non-profit corporation in Lexington, MA. We have just installed a Carousel Pro and Carousel Player 300R in our new studio.

I have some questions -- but I will post them as separate topics. I just wanted to comment on this new Forum: it is quite impressive and is headed in the right direction. The other day I was reading about how corporations were noticing that they were loosing control of customer's impression of them due to the grass roots mechanisms that have sprung up on the Internet where people comment on products outside of the company's control. Although I smiled a bit, knowing that the internet had once again caused the right thing to happen, I was intrigued by the next thought: companies were realizing that they couldn't fight this trend and instead were (perhaps reluctantly) becoming partners with their clients in trying to improve their products. Imagine that!

Well the reason I bring this up is that this new forum system that Tightrope has adopted seems to have this flavor. I welcome this attitude and others will contribute their ideas and knowledge about Tightrope's products here.

I think GetSatisfaction requires a little bit of learning itself -- it is different than the other forum systems I have seen before. For example, I haven't found the traditional search box that I can use to see if anybody else is talking about the topic on my mind. But I guess I'll figure that out.

In any case, thanks for putting effort into collaborating with your customers.
