FreddyP replied on May 11, 2009 16:41 to the question "Do I need this extension if I only use one computer?" in Xmarks:
The extension is important to me because I sync bookmarks across several systems and browsers. Even if you only use one system it will automatically backup your bookmarks on the server after every change. You can also access to your bookmarks from the website from other systems. Can be handy when traveling. So if you need these two functions, the extension is for you...if not then you probably don't need it. Your call....

Here's a link with information about Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks) Version History (along with previous version d/l's)....if that's what you're asking.

Are you running Firefox 3.x? If so, here's a link to a site with some good info about the new bookmark format and locations.
http://www.lytebyte.com/2008/06/19/un...
Seems strange that Foxmarks could wipe out the bookmark backup files since they are now in their own folder (bookmarkbackups) and are in JSON; JavaScript Object Notation (which is a data-interchange format).
I feel your pain of you've lost everything :-(
FreddyP replied on April 20, 2009 23:54 to the question "2 computer sync 'screw up'" in Xmarks:
If you're running Firefox 3.x you can restore a previous version of your bookmarks by selecting--
Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks>Import and Backup -- select restore and choose the date you want to restore to.
I thought that Foxmarks would offer you the option to merge the bookmarks between machines when first installing on a new system. Been so long since I've installed on a new system I don't remember. Maybe someone else can help in that area.
Hope this helps...not sure about any restore abilities in IE.
A comment on the problem "FoxMarks for IE 0.9.85 : temp files left behind" in Xmarks:
Colin - is this problem corrected in Xmarks 1.0.4? Will there be an update for Foxmarks now that Xmarks is being pushed? – FreddyP, on April 06, 2009 04:05
FreddyP replied on April 06, 2009 04:00 to the question "How can I add old bookmarks to new ones?" in Xmarks:
Toni - agree with freebrd06 - you'll have to vsit those offline sites on your online computer and bookmark them there. You won't need to make a list though. Just do a file>open file (Firefox) or file>open (IE) and open the "bookmarks.html" file on the browser. Each bookmark will be a clickable link, saves you some time going to each site.
FreddyP replied on April 05, 2009 06:22 to the question "Can I get offline installer packages for Xmarks? (IE and Mozilla)" in Xmarks:
Great question. I went to the Foxmarks download page at -
http://download.foxmarks.com/download...
and if I right click on the Firefox button, do a Save Link As, the download looks like a standard XPI.
Same process for IE and it looks like a Windows installer (foxmarks-installer-for-ie-0.9.85).
Note: the site above is not Xmarks, it's Foxmarks
Here's the download page for Xmarks -
http://download.xmarks.com/download/all
Might try the same File Save As process with the Xmarks site at home and then take the files to work. Not sure if your company network would block xmarks.com if the browser tries to install the add-ons. I don't think the browser needs to go online to install an XPI file; not sure about the Windows installer.
Hope this helps.
FreddyP replied on April 05, 2009 06:06 to the problem "When I try lto sync the icon rotates endlessly but the sync operation never completes. Things work on my other two machines." in Xmarks:
I'm running Bookmark Duplicate Detector Version 0.7.5 with Firefox 3.0.8 on Vista Home Premium with no problems....knock on wood! I have also installed Foxmarks Favorites Synchronizer v0.9.85 to keep bookmarks between IE7 and Firefox synchronized between both browsers on the same system along with the browsers on three other computers on my home network with no problems.
Thought I'd share this so others know that it will work, at least in my configurations. There are a few known issues with BookmarkDD in Firefox 3.x versions, but nothing that appears to interfere with Foxmarks.

Here's a link with some great info for basic Firefox troubleshooting.

Two areas in particular; Make a New Profile and Clean Reinstall may help if you really think it's a config in Firefox that got fouled up. It's worth a read anyway. Hope this helps.
FreddyP replied on April 05, 2009 01:26 to the question "bookmark this page doesnt work" in Xmarks:
I'm running Foxmarks 2.7.2 with Firefox 3.0.8 on Vista with no problems with the "Bookmark this page" function. Probably the same configuration you had before installing (upgrading?) to XMarks. Have you tried a system reboot after the change back to Foxmarks? Sometimes Windows does some funny things.
FreddyP replied on April 04, 2009 03:37 to the question "When does Syncing occur?" in Xmarks:
I have three machines connected to the Internet and running Foxmarks. Here's what I see --
It looks like when I make a change in FF the sync to the server occurs within about 5 minutes. But it looks like it can take almost a hour before the other computers sync.
Maybe someone from Foxmarks can describe the correct sync process if it's different than what I describe.-
FreddyP started following the question "Will foxmarks continue to work indefinitely?" in Xmarks.
FreddyP replied on April 04, 2009 02:27 to the problem "Xmarks installation will not complete." in Xmarks:
I know in older versions of Firefox you could do the following if you got a dialog box confirming installation but the extension wasn't listed after choosing to install.
1. Exit Firefox.
2. Go to the Firefox profile folder and look inside the "extensions" folder. If you find a staged-xpis subfolder, delete it.
Note: This link will tell you how to find the profile folder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_fol...
3. Reopen Firefox and try installing extension again.
Not sure if this works the same in 3.x versions, but you can have a look. Hope this helps.
FreddyP replied on April 04, 2009 00:30 to the question "remove from systray" in Xmarks:
You should be able to disable Foxmark start up in Vista by --
1. Start>and type msconfig in the Start Search bar
2. Hit continue if User Account Control window pops up
3. Go to Startup Tab in System Configuration window
4. Scroll down to Foxmarks Favorites Synchronizer and uncheck the box
Foxmarks should not start up when booting the system.
Hope this helps.
