After I first reported this 8 months ago, I'm still running into this problem with MD 2008r3 (635) under OS X 10.5.7.

Moneydance will not allow me to type the name “PROSHARES TR ULTSHR RU20000” into the investment register Security field. As soon as I hit the first “U”, it autocompletes with a different similar security name and leaves that entire incorrect name selected, so when I hit the “L”, it replaces the entire name with “L” and tries to autocomplete that, which of course doesn't work.

The autocomplete fails even if it comes up with the CORRECT security and I keep typing. Don't tell me to stop typing when the security is selected, because I'm a touch typist, and by the time I see the selection appear, I've already wiped it out with the next character. The autocomplete feature should not depend on the user entering the name slowly letter..................by...............letter to get it to work. I should be able to type the entire name, regardless of autocompletion, and it should just work.

The autocomplete procedure should not select the entire security name when it thinks it has a match. It should select ONLY the characters in the autocompleted name FOLLOWING the last character I typed, leaving the first part of the name unselected. Then if I type another character, it will replace only the trailing characters, and the autocomplete algorithm can look for another match.

This isn't rocket science, guys. It's a flaw in the user interface that should be fixed. I've seen similar problems with autocomplete when I'm typing category names in bank and credit card accounts.

I've been using MD for years, and appreciate all the hard work the developers have put into it. But this problem bites me almost every time I enter transactions, and it gets more irritating the longer it goes on!

A comment on the question "Getting next check number from alternate account in memorized transactions" in The Infinite Kind:

    Gordon Alley
If I switch to a different checking account to enter the check transaction, why would I then want to use the next check number from the previous account? I'm using printed books of checks in both accounts, so if the number doesn't match the next number in the book I'm using, I have to manually enter the check number. The only reason I tried + in the check number field was in hopes that it would pick up the next sequence number from the account I had switched to. – Gordon Alley, on April 02, 2009 16:52

Getting next check number from alternate account in memorized transactions
I have a memorized transaction I use for a monthly payment. I defaults to the checking account I normally use, and is configured with <next> in the check number field, so it displays the next check number from the default account when the dialog appears. About once every 4 months, I write that check against a different checking account. So in the latter case, I call up the memorized transaction, and select the alternate account from the popup. The check number still shows the next number from the default account. When I hit cmd-+ in the check number field to try to bring up the next check number from the alternate account, it gets it from the default account instead. Seems like it should change the next check number to match the changed account selection.

If I have the “Check for Updates at Startup” preference selected in the Moneydance Updater extension, it puts up the alert usually a second or two after startup. Otherwise, the alert appears when I manually run the Moneydance Updater extension.

Reconcile Account dialog Cleared toggle oddity
I just noticed something odd in the Reconcile Account dialog. Maybe it's a feature, but I find it a bit disconcerting.

If I click anywhere in the blank area below the last transaction in either the Payments or Deposits list, it toggles the Cleared indicator in that last transaction.

I think you should have to click on the transaction itself to toggle the Cleared indicator.

I just checked the nabble.com thread, which indicated there is a Java setting to allow Java to accept incoming connections. I checked my Java preferences, and could find no setting that mentions internet connections.

    Autocomplete algorithm needs work!
I'm entering dividend transactions for three securities:
    PROSHARES TR SEMICONDUCT PR
    PROSHARES TR ULTRASHRT FINL
    PROSHARES TR ULTSHR RU2008

For the first security, I can type “proshares tr s“, and it autocompletes the first security name, which is what I'm looking for, so I tab out of the Security field and go on.

For the second security, I can type “proshares tr u”, and it autocompletes the second security name, which again is what I'm looking for, so I tab out of the Security field and go on.

For the third security, when I've typed “proshares tr u”, it autocompletes the SECOND security name (as above), and leaves the entire name selected, so when I type the following letter (“l”) it replaces the entire second security name with the letter “l”, and tries to autocomplete with a name starting with an “l”. For some reason, the autocomplete feature doesn't realize there are multiple securities that begin with “proshares tr ult” and allow me to continue typing.

I've found only 2 ways to enter the 3rd security name in the Security field:
    1. Use the popup menu to select the correct name without typing it at all (I have several hundred securities on file, so this isn't very convenient).
    2. Type slowly so that I can stop before the “l” that replaces the autocompleted 2nd security name, hit RIGHT ARROW to jump the insertion bar to the end of the selected 2nd security name (deselecting the name), hit DELETE until I've deleted “RASHRT FINL”, type “S”, and voila!, it autocompletes the 3rd security name.

I've had this problem with sets of similar-named securities before.

The autocomplete feature shouldn't work that way. If I continue typing after autocomplete has found a name and filled in the field, it should remove the filled-in characters and continue searching with the additional characters I type.

It shouldn't be too hard to make it work right.

    Thanks.

    Thanks. That did fix it.

But that brings up another question. Why does MD need to accept incoming connections to check for updates? Isn't that initiated by an outgoing connection? I have other applications that check for and download updates that don't require special firewall settings to accept incoming connections.

MD seems to be looking for incoming network connections
Recently, each time I launch Moneydance, I get an alert with the text “Do you want the application 'Moneydance.app' to accept incoming network connections?”

I can't think of any reason MD would need to accept incoming connections. What's going on here? None of my other apps are doing this.

Home window keeps moving in front of Security Details window
I right-click on an investment account in the account list on my MD Home window, to open a new window for the investment account. So now the Investment window (in Portfolio View) is on top of the Home window.

Then I select the Securities Detail tab to display that information in the investment window. I select a security to examine. Then I click on the History button to open the Currency/Security History dialog.

The Currency/Security History dialog opens on top of the other windows as expected, but NOT expected is that the Home window jumps in front of the Securities Detail window (but stays behind the dialog).

If the Securities Detail window is still visible behind the Home window, I can click on it to bring it in front of the Home window again. But clicking on any button (or even where there is no button) on the History dialog (or on its child Edit Security dialog) will cause the Home window to jump in front of the Securities Detail window once again (including when I click DONE in the dialog to dismiss it).

The other dialogs that can be called up with buttons on the Securities Detail window (Stock Split, Add Security, Edit Security, Remove Security) do not exhibit this behavior. There's something very odd going on between the Currency/History Dialog (and its child Edit Security dialog) and the Home window.

I'm usually editing multiple securities in the same session, and it is a bit annoying to have to keep bringing the Security Details window back to the front after dismissing the Currency/Security History dialog.
