I think the problem lies with the registration dialog sheet. The instant Today starts (in the Menu Bar) it is NOT in the Dock, but the moment the registration dialog appears so does the Dock icon ... and it doesn't go away after dismissing the dialog.
Intel C2D, 10.5.2, overwrote 1.0.1 but trashed prefs after the bug first appeared.
If registering makes it work ... well, I'll just have to register :)

Looks like this is the newer thread (sorry for bumping the old 1.0.1 one earlier). This is persistent in 1.1 release for me, and trashing prefs does not help.
Starts up in Dock, then I check "Show Today in Menu Bar" in prefs, then restart when asked ... boom. Today in both the Dock and the Menu Bar.-

Geoff replied on May 01, 2008 18:33 to the problem "Calendar shows yesterday" in Second Gear:
I mentioned the "automatically revert after a period of time" approach because I think it would be bad form if I had set the view to a certain future day for reference, then closed Today for just a couple of minutes, then opened it again ... only to find that it had been reset. I agree with Justin's sentiments in that case.
If I opened it again 3 hours later or the next day, though, I would expect it to have reset to "what's going on now." The appropriate amount of time that must pass before reverting would certainly be subjective. Maybe 30 minutes would be appropriate, or maybe it could be user configurable to accommodate personal preference.
Geoff replied on May 01, 2008 14:31 to the idea "Supercharge Today's menu icon" in Second Gear:
I leave Today idle in the Menu Bar because it's more of a service than an app, to me. I agree that SOME menu is needed if it is running up there, at least About, Preferences, Check for Updates, and Quit items.
As for "couldn't I just open iCal," I think that assigning a hot key to Today (I used Ctrl+M from Entourage's My Day) clears that up, as you have it instantly accessible from anywhere, and you can put it away just as quickly.

Only a comment on the vertical space issue:
I agree about the "Today is ..." bar seeming superfluous when I've already go the date in my menu bar (although it does serve to set the calendar to the current day).
The second bar (date selection) is a necessary interface for controlling the viewport, IMHO. I don't see how you could cut it or move it off of the window to the menu bar. Resize or rethink it, maybe, but not get rid of it.
Maybe thin out (vertically) the date selection bar, group the arrows on the right side, and add a "Today" button to the left side to jump to the current date.
Geoff reported a problem in Second Gear on May 01, 2008 14:16:
Calendar shows yesterdayIn the current release, when I started up Today on April 30, put my MacBook Pro to sleep overnight, and opened it from the menu bar this morning (May 1), the calendar is still showing April 30 ... I had to manually change it to May 1.
I would have expected this to be automatically showing the current day, unless I had manually changed it to a certain day, in which case I would have expected it to automatically revert to the current day after a period of time.

I'd like to be able to Cmd+drag the menu bar icon to rearrange it relative to my other icons. This is a common feature, but I'm not sure what enables/limits that functionality.
FANTASTIC v1.0, by the way. I only recently was weaned from Entourage, and was already hooked on My Day from Office 2008. Today looks like a fantastic replacement, with future improvements down the road. Thanks!
