A comment on the idea "Tracking Firefox Add-ons" in Wakoopa:
LOL on that page somebody also says:
> also there should be a counter to the "this is one of the best points" as well (ie. "this is one of the worst points")
Currently there are two people here who think this is one of the best points. I wondering how that total would look if down votes were to be enabled :) – gerry, on September 15, 2009 11:55

Does the current recommendation engine base it's decisions mainly on total usage time of software? I didn't know that, seems like a kinda simplistic and flawed measurement. I guess that's why no matter what software page I'm looking at, Wakoopa always recommends the Wakoopa tracker as a good alternative to that app. *rolls eyes*
I've growing tired of debating this with you as it seems you can't pick a grievance and stick with it. I point out a flaw in your argument, you start a new argument, I point out a flaw in that, you move onto something else. It think this is a lot less about "Some healthy criticism" and a lot more about you not wanting to be wrong. This is likely to be the last response I will make to you, so feel free to take advantage of that. – gerry, on September 10, 2009 05:11

Well again I would refer to the tag line. "discover software and games" The keyword this time being "discover". Maybe tracking usage in units of time is what it's all about for you, but personally I'm mostly here more for the discovery part. When I recommend Wakoopa to friends I tell them that it helps me find better alternatives to the software that I'm currently using. I want it to do that for my Firefox extensions too. – gerry, on September 09, 2009 20:19

If you were to be very liberal with the "instructions executed by a computer" part then you could consider it software. However I think most people would consider an excel sheet data which instructions are executed upon. – gerry, on September 06, 2009 23:14

> Well, ok, that's what I thought. I don't believe you can track actual usage, as that's different for every extension, many don't get 'used' at all.
Yup
> Many aren't applications either.
Wakoopa's tag line is "discover software and games" not "discover applications and games"and to quote FOLDOC (http://foldoc.org/software):
"The instructions executed by a computer, as opposed to the physical device on which they run (the "hardware")." – gerry, on September 06, 2009 18:27

Personally I think that tracking usage of extensions would be next to impossible, but then again it wouldn't be the first time wakoopa amazed me. However personally all I would want to see is the extensions installed for each user (especially myself as I install different things on different PCs and tracking them all is tricky) and weather they are enabled or disabled. – gerry, on September 06, 2009 17:43

> Or have 3 reviews reviews at the top be highly rated while below it are the newest (kind of like a sponsored search listing / organic search listing structure).
Well those top 3 reviews would still be feeding on themselves. The point of the ranking system would be to have the actual top reviews for that time in that list, so you would need a system that aids that.
> Also, if a review becomes so outdated that it is no longer relevant (due to program updates/new versions), I would hope that users would click the thumbs down and move its ranking.
That would take just as long for it to be removed as it took for it to get up there. Maybe longer as when some software is first released there is a lot of hype and publicity around it that isn't seen for updates.

Another though on this. Digg style voting works well (as far as rating systems go) for digg, because headlines have a very short life span. However this method has the flaw that it doesn't scale over time. This flaw would become a lot more apparent for things with lifespans which are much longer than a day, because it's a system that feeds on itself. Comments near the top will receive more and more thumbs up while newer and more relevant reviews won't ever reach the levels of a popular review that was made a year or more before the new review. Even after a couple of days of the release of a new product this is likely to become an issue.
Perhaps a system where the value of a vote degrades over time would be better. Or a the ranking could be based on a number of factors,
ie.
average thumb vote
+
days since post as a percentage of days since the first post
x
how much you want this percentage to be worth

gerry asked a question in Wakoopa on May 26, 2009 16:46:
Browser Usage: This seems wrong, IE 19th on all OSes?
I have selected Windows, Mac and Linux as my operating systems, yet IE ranks 19th in the list of browser usage. While I like the thought that IE ranks so low among all Wakoopa users and that the over-hyped Chrome is beaten by the under-hyped Konqueror, Epiphany and Swiftweasel, it all seems a little too good to be true.
Is there a bug in the Linux version of the tracker that is skewing the results or are Wakoopa Linux users just using their browsers for longer?
If the stats are correct it makes a pretty damn phenominal statement. Like when the TV advertising world realised that demographics could be a much more significant factor in effective advertising than the number of viewers.
