I think that the plasma lifespan issues are largely overstated. Plasma televisions are currently capable of deeper blacks than LCD and tend to have more natural colours, plus they're usually quite a bit cheaper for a given screen size.
Lifespan is more than adequate for any non-pathological couch potato. Panasonic, for instance, claims that if their sets are used for 6.5 hours a day they will last 42 years. The only issue is that plasmas can suffer burn-in if part of a picture, like a channel logo or game HUD remains in one spot for a long time.-
