Ive worked with expedia/travelocity/orbitz/others representing hotel reservation departments. Often we get expedia calling up our reservation department asking if we would cancel the booking. If the hotel wipes out the booking without taking a fee then expedia will let the customer go scott free. Hotels will do this to stay in good standing with the giants.
You just have to call and say your wife had a baby or some other logical excuse.-
