I forgot to update this; someone pointed me to that on VMware's forums, and it worked brilliantly. – King Spook, on November 14, 2008 20:54

Following http://communities.vmware.com/message... worked for me.
Open VMWare Fusion 2, Select your virtual machine, click Settings, then click Sharing. Make sure the "Allow your Mac to open applications in the virtual machine" checkbox is not checked. Close that window.
For Boot Camp partitions look in
"/Users/trcjr/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm".
If there is an "Applications" folder in there remove it.

I excluded the entire directory of VM bundles; no change. – King Spook, on September 27, 2008 09:18
