I switched over to RescueTime because the lack of having to manually record when I was working on things sounded great. In reality, without this feature (filtering by window name), it has meant although I have RescueTime installed, it's useless and I don't use it at all.
I know RescueTime is free and what they've done is awesome, but I'm going to start looking for another tool that can do the job. Perhaps it was my unrealistic expectations but from the comments I expected this feature added within weeks - and now it's been a year.

I really don't understand why this is still not in, as it was mentioned in some other thread to be one of the "top requested features" months ago. I am still having RT installed (though not actively using it because its not that useful for me without this feature) because none of the competitors have come up with this feature yet, or lack appropriate statistics for it (like JournalLive), but as soon as someone implements this (for-me-)killer-feature, I will abandon RT and switch over.
Considering that the data (Window title) is already collected anyway, wouldn't it be quite simple to have an option that uses the Window Title instead of the application name? That would be a crude solution (and in the end it should be possible to have custom grouping, e.g. using Wildcards for window titles, and selective use of application name or window title), but way better than no solution at all at moment.

Yes, I really wanted to find this app useful, but I use my computer for both work and personal tasks. In particular, general productivity apps like Office (Word, Outlook). Further data on the URL would also be useful for tagging sites like Wikipedia. But mainly I have hours logged in Word and Outlook and no way to tell what I was doing. This makes my data pretty much useless. I look forward to returning (even *paying*) when I can accurately tag my usage. Thanks.

Bump. Really need to be able to tag based on window title as well as application. I use putty to connect to local servers for work and remote servers for non-work.
As a clarification to this, it would be useful to be able to specifiy a regex for the title as often the title will be changed during a single session (e.g. for unix shell current directory).

ppgs, I have to disagree with you.
Disk space is cheap. Bandwidth is relatively cheap. If the users want a feature, and RescueTime has the technical ability to deliver that feature, then nothing else should get in the way of adding that feature.
It would probably be more expensive in the long term to build (and maintain) a client side UI (both Mac & PC) to do tagging locally, than it would be to just store all the data on the servers and have 1 unified UI to add tags from.
ppgs replied on April 15, 2008 01:50 to the question "How can I view window_title data from the dashboard?" in RescueTime:
Same request for me. I do not understand the point in Rescue Time to upload all window title information (in plain English: "file names"), if this information is made un-available in the dashboard, just sitting on Rescue Time's servers.
But for privacy issues, it is definitely better that all the tagging of files and folders is done locally on the machine by the Rescue Time Data Collector.
Instead of uploading
app_name: Photoshop
window_title: 'TopSecretClient_HomePageComp_01.psd'
then to upload
app_name: Photoshop
window_title: 'Work' (< - tags defined locally on the machine)
That would also reduce the amount of data uploaded to Rescue Time's servers, therefore reducing its costs (or allowing for more users for the same amount of servers).

This kind of "granularity" would obviously extend the usefulness of RescueTime tremendously. The possibility of being able to assign tags based solely on the app being used, OR attributes like text patterns in the name of the data file the app is working with at the time, OR the window title of an application would be fantastic. We're asking the world from these guys, but hey, they may be able to deliver -- go, guys, go.....

I would like to join in on these requests. I use MS Terminal Services Client (remote desktop) on many of my customers and therefore just telling me that I have used this program does not really tell me anything. I know that most of my day is spent on other servers from remote desktop, but I do not know wich ones. Adding the window title can be done easily if you do it in delphi:
ForegroundWnd :=GetForegroundWindow;
windows.GetWindowText(ForegroundWnd, capt, 79);
the caption will be in the capt variable. But i guess you knew this already. So to summen up: Please add the window title...

I actually DO think that this email is being caught by my spam filter at MessageLabs. This means that I can never see it (the mail is simply deleted). I've looked in the Junk mail on my Outlook and there is no new mail there.
Seeing as how I administer our company's MessageLabs settings then if you could possibly tell me the address (email address that is!) that the validation emails will come from then I can whitelist this with MessageLabs.
However, you should note that the number of false positives that I get reported to me by our users is incredibly small. I would say that I get one request a year. If MessageLabs thinks that your validation email is spam then there is probably a valid reason.
A sequence such as:
webiste generates a code which I paste into an email to "validation@rescuetime.com", which then sends that email onward to the registered address with an additional code in it, which I then paste back into the web browser would probably work better through just about all spam filters.
Just a thought... it seems to be the unsolicitated nature of email and containing a link that triggers most spam filter errors.
