Roy Steves asked a question in Apple on May 28, 2008 04:27:
How can I make my pointer move at a constant rate versus my mouse? When you move an external mouse slowly, the pointer moves very slowly, and when you move it quickly, it the pointer moves very quickly. This sounds intuitive, but the tracking speed is not proportional to the mouse movement. I need the mouse and pointer to move at a 1 to 1 when using programs like Photoshop. How can I disable this "helpful" mouse speed acceleration/deceleration?

Hi Roy!
You're thinking along the same lines as us, I like your idea! If you sell Nike shoes, we're planning on showing your company badge (with a tagline like "Sells Nike products") in Nike topics so that everyone can see that you work for a related company. You're comments will have more weight. I like your idea of then conversely showing helpful employees of related companies in unclaimed companies (it even puts a little pressure on the uninvolved company to step up and get active).

Actually, he said hard to "disprove," not verify. It's like saying "when a tree falls in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" There is a true or false condition that is substantive, but it's not disprovable, and therefore not a scientific assertion. If a positive result comes into public eye, you have an answer, but you'd have to wait forever to verify a negative result (imagine saying "what if it comes out tomorrow" every day).

You know, I asked another question about volunteering to be semi-official reps for manufacturers of products I sell till their own employees join in. It dawns on me that a good solution to this issue could cover that one at the same time. If you have a list of "sells" relationships, you can show representatives of companies that are likely to help you if the original manufacturer isn't playing.
Haven't thought it all the way through, but seems like a good two-birds-one-stone kinda situation. It's kinda fun brainstorming code I don't have to write myself ;)

yes, totally. we recognize this as an issue in the system, and we're going to figure out a solution soon.
it's a little tricky, because we do want to associate the manufacturer with the product when it's created (somebody made it!) *and also* allow for retail and other associated outlets to connect that product directly to their companies, as well. but, at the moment, our interface doesn't support developing all those relationships in connection with adding a product. soon though! this is definitely a priority for us.

We're working on implementing a coupon code system so that we could issue coupons to customers, but that backend would then also support general-use discounts like that. It also would give us a chance to offer things to entice repeat customers (ship a coupon code with their order).
It's cool for us to get repeat business, and cool for you to get a discount when you do come back. I love it when everybody wins.

For me, if I could see that there are active, informed participants around that company or product I'm more inclined to use it. If some of those participants are employees than that's even better. We're already allowing all users to "follow" products and companies they care about--the next step is to use these expressed relationships to foster more interaction around those things. So much to do!

"Or is that the company space doesn't actually have any participation?"
That's still a chicken-and-egg situation, though. I'm less likely to use a channel that is employee-less, since I'd feel like I'm yelling into the void, and other people doing the same is of limited interest to me. But then, one user does not a case-study make.

Interesting! I wonder what's making it feel like a ghost town in the first place? Is it just the wording that "No one"... is here? Or is that the company space doesn't actually have any participation?
If it's the first case then a really light weight way to fill out an empty company would be to feature really active participants right next to the message, "No one from Apple has sponsored, endorsed, or joined the conversation yet. Learn how to get involved."
And, if those active users happen to be representatives of related companies we can display that information, shaming the original company into participation. ;)
