i have several friends requests each day (up to ten per day) from people i don't know and it's starting to get annoying. so i have several propositions.
1) would it be possible to have a "i don't need any new friends" option to avoid this spam
2) if it's not possible could we, at least, ban the people who don't take no for an answer? Some people don't understand when you reject their invitation and they ask again everyday....

It is possible to create user lists (e.g. work, school, ..).

My Friends > right click a user > Add to List

Assigning friends with tags (e.g. "work") and grouping them would also help a lot!

it doesn't work much better, we don't have the error message anymore but uploading doesn't work, i keep having "1 pending transacation" but it doesn't upload the file. the file itself is 12mb so it's not a big one. i also tried loging out and loging in again even close the software and relaunch it and it doesn't change anything

Who's talking about VOIP ??? As a matter of fact, i work in the internet industry, online gaming industry in fact and we did launch of site without a good forum in the beginning for different reasons.
i think that was a mistake, 1st because it would have been a good tool for the community, second it would have been a good marketing tool for us to understand what our players were expecting.....wich is more cheaper than a post test believe me :-)
in france we have an expression "le mieux est l'ennemi du bien", wich is hard to translate sorry about that..... what i mean is i don't think we need 3D avatars, VOIP or stuff too complicated to implement and of course that costs a lot...
A forum would be a great start, it's quite easy to implement with vbulletin or smf and the forum would help you get a feedback about what the community really wants......

butthen again it's just my opinion ;-)

Yes, I agree, we don't need another IM network. How about implementing a Jabber server in wuala client? that way you can use external programs for the actual communication and would allow for same IM names as Wuala names. That way you can leave chat and VOIP functionality for whatever programs the users choose to use.
