Duplicate friend requests showing up from the same peopleCurrently I have a friend pending approval - wise blood. I don't know who they are and they haven't added a picture, so I haven't accepted the request yet. But for some reason they're showing up twice on the http://playfoursquare.com/manage_friends page. My username on foursquare is xaotica if you want to check out what I mean...

Improving how foursquare integrates with twitter direct messageswhen i initially read the part about integrating foursquare with twitter, i didn't understand what the website text meant. it says "Twitter limits you to 1000 DMs per day... if you have 200 foursquare friends, you could whip thru this pretty quick"
i interpreted that to mean that if i enabled dms, it'd be sending a dm to EVERYONE on my twitter list vs. only people who already use foursquare and have given foursquare permission to send them DMs.
it's possible that's just me and everyone else who read it understood what it meant, but i think it'd be ideal to reword it to make it more clear... 'cause i had that feature turned off unnecessarily out of a desire not to spam people and as a result none of my friends who wanted to get my checkins via DM were getting them.
i'd also like a way other than checking my twitter sent messages of knowing how many of my friends are getting my checkins as DMs. i don't want to reach my 1,000 message limit but as my foursquare list grows it's going to get harder and harder to figure out how many i've sent and how many remain. so if foursquare had a way of counting that and saying "you have used 278 of 1,000 twitter DMs" that would be rad.

i would like to have a more informative public profile.i regularly change my appearance to the point where casual friends/acquaintances might not even recognize me at first. for example, i recently went from long black and red dreads to hot pink hair.
so for that reason as well as a variety of others, i would like to be able to have a more informative dodgeball profile. i'd like to be able to link to my homepage at a bare minimum and provide a public email address. better yet would be if i could add links to last.fm, delicious, flickr, etc etc and if my twitter username showed up in my public profile.
groovinkim replied on March 14, 2009 22:43 to the question "So why is having a city necessary?" in foursquare:
in the past with dodgeball the reason you chose a city was so that you would only get sms messages when you were in that city.
for example, i have friends in seattle, portland, san francisco and nyc who all used dodgeball. when i'm at home in seattle, none of my nyc friends really care to get sms messages telling them that i'm at linda's... it's not like they are going to hop a flight and join me ;)
however, i go and visit nyc once in awhile, so when i was there i would change my city to nyc and then my nyc friends would see that i was in a bar in brooklyn and my friends in seattle would not have to get a text message with that mostly useless to them information

yeah, although there's a place where you can submit the info via email to update a venue, i think it'd be a lot faster if foursquare just trusted users to edit it correctly. i don't think there would ever be an issue with a malicious person randomly putting in wrong addresses, and as long as the system kept a log of what the previous address was and who changed it (similar to a wiki) it could always be rolled back if that situation ever arose.
it'd also be significantly less work... nobody wants to go through and manually update a bunch of addresses from emails that people send. it's boring

groovinkim replied on March 14, 2009 22:32 to the question "Any plans to charge for this sweet service?" in foursquare:
i think that'd dramatically decrease the userbase. many of my friends who used dodgeball are not very technically inclined people. they only use the service via sms and don't even have phones with data plans.
but i'd have no problem with ads being displayed in a tasteful way (a la twitteriffic) or with there being some promotional stuff for sale like t-shirts or stickers.
groovinkim replied on January 19, 2009 21:05 to the question "SMS users can't see my location name?" in Brightkite:
ack, sorry... after further grilling a friend via IM, i misunderstood their problem. apparently the issue is one that you likely already know about... when i check in from one of the places that is not already in brightkite's database (for example, oddfellows - http://www.yelp.com/biz/oddfellows-ca...) or my house, which is one of my placemarks, they aren't seeing the name.
it just occurred to me that from what i can tell you guys just pull from google, so i could just add the missing places to google maps myself. i just did that for oddfellows.
my friends don't have data on their phones though, so they wouldn't be able to go to google and submit that data while they're out and about. so they need a way to check in via sms using the name of a place which does not yet exist in the database. dodgeball would let users do this, keep a record of the name they'd used, and then they could go back later on and when they added the place via the web it would automatically link it to their checkin.
this has probably already been floated as a suggestion and i missed it, but it would definitely mollify them if they were allowed to check in via a name that doesn't exist yet.
there could also be a public running list of places that people had signed in from that don't exist in the database yet, and a link to google local and a description of how they could add that place to the google database themselves. that way people who have free time on their hands could be put to work entering locations in the database and it'd make brightkite easier to use for everyone ;)
in dodgeball everyone was used to checking in from their house to indicate that they wanted people to come over. a lot of us live in large houses (ie i have 6 roommates) and we regularly host movie nights, video game nights, etc. so for example i'd check in from zhouse with a comment, and dodgeball would send all my friends @zhouse, 988 21st ave, "come over and watch movies at 8pm!"
unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to do this on brightkite... nobody sees my placemark names, they just get the address.

i live in seattle and would love to see more seattle people using the service. but since brightkite is geared more towards technically inclined people, i feel like advertising online would probably bring in more users than advertising in the print paper. all the cool papers mentioned have online advertising.

groovinkim asked a question in Brightkite on January 19, 2009 19:51:
SMS users can't see my location name?My friends who are using this service via SMS say they can't see the name of the place where I'm checking in.
Some background: I've been using Brightkite for awhile now. All my friends use Dodgeball. I tried to get them to test out another service, but they weren't interested. Then google dropped the news that Dodgeball is getting canned, so they all were willing to sign up for Brightkite again.
On Dodgeball, when you check in from a location, your SMS friends get a message saying "Kimberley has checked in at Remedy Teas." and the address follows. My friends are saying that all they see is the address of where I'm checking in from, which is useless to them since they of course don't have the addresses of different bars/coffeeshops/etc. memorized.
I've only used Brightkite via the iphone app or the mobile site, both of which show the names. But my friends don't have data plans on their phones - they require a service which will show the location name via SMS vs. the address.
I have them all set to trusted friends and have my privacy set to public for everything, so I don't think it's a setting I can change on my end. Is there something they'd need to change on their end to see the location name?
If not, I hope this is a pending feature for the future... 'cause without a name displayed via SMS, none of them are willing to use Brightkite :/
