Thanks Lars...just little things that add up to a lot clicks and can be fixed as user level options. Chris – guitarfrenzi, on August 28, 2008 10:56

Chris,
I'm really grateful that you take time out of your schedule to share your feedback and suggestions with us. I've noticed that you are one of our precious power users. At the stage we are now, feedback from users like you is our most valuable asset.
Our goal is to have a direct dialog with our users and be very responsive to questions and suggestions. We read all messages and usually respond to everybody with a personal email.
I noticed we didn't respond to your previous message within a reasonable time. This was because we didn't get the notification as expected from GetSatisfaction. From now on we will rely on RSS feeds that give us real time updates everytime something is submitted to GS, but please allow 24 hours due to time zone issues and the fact that we sometimes need to think about your suggestions before we respond:)
We review all suggestions from our users and put them in our iteration plan as appropriate. Sometimes we're not able to fix something immediately, and move it to the next iteration. It's always a struggle to make the right priorities and fit everything in.
Please keep the suggestions coming, Chris. You seem to be spot on in the issues that we need to fix and the features we need to bring in. We have a great roadmap for the fall and look forward to releasing the next major updates to Secondbrain.
Thank you for using Secondbrain,
Lars

Firefox Bookmarklet - Flagging Collections as Private by DefaultFireFox Bookmarklet saves new Collection as Private when the Private box remains unticked.
Turn off Auto Tagging...it sucks!
When I click on 'Collections', I expect to see the collections displayed LHS. Why does it take another click on an individual Collection to make this happen?
Start engaging your users (like following up on suggestions pronto!) or risk losing them to Self Hosted Lifestreaming ...like Sweetcron.

Visual Flow of Collections and Tags(1) I spend a fair bit of effort in a naming scheme for Collections, unfortunately this effort is not reflected when viewing my Home Page....Why? Because the default sort-view for collections is not set to 'Sort Alphabetically" in fact there is not an option at all.To me it looks like visual diarrhea when lists are not sorted according to the alphabet.....surely this should be the default?
(2) Tagging! (a) There needs to be Tag Management at the upper levels that flow down to items at the Library level. I would like (the option) to override Library level items with the Tag(s) set at the Collection level....so much easier to get some relevancy into the cloud
(b) It's all about the Tag Cloud...I have yet to see a nice clean and relevant Tag Cloud on S|B, because I suspect it is too hard to manage the tags. When clicking on a tag cloud item the "Drill down Further' entries are all over the place (not focused and not relevant) and I suspect YouTube is one of the culprits and there are probably other services where the tags are not editable within S|B or indeed on the source service itself....which makes it impossible to hone S|B into a Lean Mean Relevancy Machine ..
(3) Give the option to delete content from any view.
(4) Give me a setting that defines X days before content is auto deleted from 'Your Updates' These entries are just Tag Cloud pollution if they indeed do flow through to the cloud?
Surely...once an entry is put into a Collection, it should be removed from 'Your Updates'? Maybe 'Your Updates' populates the latest entries on S|B Home page ? If so, couldn't that come from Library entries via their time stamps...which would mean they are keeper entries and not just spur of the moment bookmarks.
(5) Let me see the S|B homepage (whilst working on my profile) without needing to Log Out.
Cheers,
Chris

Not sure if this has been covered already, but in trying to develop a tagging scheme within S|B, I discovered that YouTube Videos have tags embedded, but are not editable within S|B or indeed YouTube Favorites.
Would it be possible to have the option of stripping out the tags and adding them according to our own schemes? There's just too much Tag noise and YouTube seems to be the main offender.
On this topic, I would prefer to have the option of turning Auto Tagging OFF as default...also helps with the Tag noise.
Have you considered running polls for new feature requests, to see what should be a priority?
Cheers,
Chris

Wow...you must have looked at my profile action from last night...I signed up for ping.fm ticked all the boxes and started pinging music. To my horror I realized all my activity had been pushed out to each service.
I looked in friendfeed and realized it was populated from Pownce, so disabled that in Friendfeed...and of course the twits and FF and Pownce etc...came flowing into S|B. So I start digging around S|B looking for an undo x amount of activity facility and discovered it's impossible to delete stuff easily.
So I went back to Twitter and FF and deleted all the rubbish, thinking the changes would propogate down to S|B but alas it was not to be..hence this post.
I think I need a SocialNetworking console that shows all the API plumbing between the services...so i can see if any wires are crossed.
S|B seems to have a good balance between technical and UI ...I was actually surprised that (only) 10,000 users were on board and pleasantly surprised at that..because the content seems good and not full of " I'm feeding the cat "..." I'm now picking my nose...and eating it " probably the Brain part of the S|B name scares them off to FaceBook.
I'm sure you guys want 10 x that number of users, but by keeping the service standards high you'll attract quality content in return.
Oh! and when you start monetizing, please offer at least payPal as a payment gateway. I cant believe Evernote only accept Google Checkout...I want to pay them some money, but not with a gateway that uses a GMail account for ID.
Oh and on Evernote, please incorporate their API when it is available...it's a great App/ Service
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris, this is really valuable feedback and advice for us. The short answer is of course 'quality'. We have had a quantity focus in order to reach a level where we cover 'most of them'. Or I should probably say, the 80% of services that are 'most used'. We'll continue to add services every now and then but our focus will be on establishing solid connections utilizing APIs. With the goal of providing better functionality on e.g. synchronization and two-way integration.
I think duplicates handling will be a very important issue this fall with the uprise of several aggregators and power-publish services like ping.fm and others. The first step towards this will be to simply merge these duplicates into one and display that this is posted on 'Twitter, Facebook and FriendFeed'. Same thing with bookmarks, if it points to the same URL it should appear as one instance but reference where it is posted. The details in how we're going to approach this is an on-going discussion so please feel free to jump in with what you think.
But back to your original question about spending our resources on adding 'anything under the sun' or making the synchronization and connections smarter and more solid, it boils down to what you guys want. We did get a lot of requests on more services which we tried our best to accommodate, and with feedback like yours (and by all means, our own gut-feeling on this as well) we'll go in and tweak every nut and bolt in how we're working with the services we have connected to make them even better.
Just keep it coming, Chris. We love to hear your 2ยข on stuff like this....

"FWA requires Macromedia Flash, version 7 "
Well on their wallpapers like at http://www.thefwa.com/?app=wallpapers... simply scrolling on the wheel (Firefox 3 on WinXP sp3) initiates the loading of another page of slides chronologically....a downward scroll moves the dates earlier..
Maybe Safari has scripts disabled or something...
Easily the best page system navigation system I've seen, a very nicely implemented site overall.

Chris

Yup, we're pretty much aligned on this one. Basically, the work you've already have done in terms of organization should be reflected on Secondbrain. We'll roll out two things in the next months to accommodate what you're asking here. First we'll introduce 'Service Collections' which will let you see everything you have in the specific services. Second we'll add the appropriate subsets to these - playlists for YouTube, albums on Picasa etc. We've also discussed making collections based on content type, but decided to go with service based as a start and keep the content type sorting option in the filtering.
And as you point out, when adding even more collections we need to reorganize how the collection lists are displayed. I'm not really sure what you specifically were thinking on on thwfwa.com there was no scrolling action going on when I tried it out on my mac/safari. Care to elaborate?

Should S|B deliver Quality or Quantity =>Web ServicesSome of us sign up for every service out there and unfortunately sometimes results in a lot of cross pollination/ duplication into other services. It's then pulled into an aggregator like S|B
It should be enough to delete the unwanted data from the source service and have the deletion take effect in the aggregator like S|B.
S|B is my favorite service at the moment, but the biggest disappointment for me is that it's near impossible to effectively get rid of data i don't want, because of something silly i did elsewhere.
I want S|B to be my persona on the web, but it must fully sync with the services it pulls in and reflect the changes made (in both directions preferably)!
I just hope that S|B does not fall into the trap of Quantity vs Quality of the services it pulls in.
If I want to aggregate every service under the sun, i can go to Profilatic for that.
If I want tight and timely integration with the most useful/ serious services out there, i am hoping S|B will deliver.
Please concentrate on the most solid, useful and well backed services (that will stay around for sometime) and avoid duplication of functionality with services you support.

Map You Tube Playlists to Secondbrain CollectionsCurrently You Tube Favorites (assembled into playlists) are pulled into SB as individual entries, which then need to be assembled into SB collections....a lot of duplicated work.
Can we automatically create a collection from a You Tube Playlist and populate it with the playlisted entries.
Be nice to have some folder icons that relate to the content they refer to..like video or music
Not sure that every collection needs to have an avatar on the RHS of every line.
Once a lot of collections are in place then the 1|2|3.... navigation comes into play...this is one of the most tiring aspects of a UI and not RSI friendly. Something like is implemented on the wallpaper section of this site (using the scroll wheel):
